Best Tips to Clean Window sills and Window Tracks

Windowsills and window tracks are two of the most easily forgotten areas of a home to consider the need for cleaning. In many homes, windows are rarely opened. Windowsills are often hidden behind curtains or blinds, and when they are in sight are used for plants and nick-nacks. Too, large furniture such as couches or chairs often blocks windowsills, so the need for cleaning isn’t that apparent. That being said, just because the dirt is out of sight doesn’t mean it isn’t there, and windowsills and window tracks should be cleaned whenever there is deep cleaning. Windowsills should also be wiped with a damp cloth on regular cleaning days. The frequency of cleaning window tracks will depend on how often you open your window. Opening windows will also bring in pollen, and outside sand and grit, so even windowsills will need to be cleaned more often.

 

Here are some tips for cleaning windowsills:

·        > The first thing you need to think about when cleaning windowsills is what material they are made of. Usually, marble or wood are the surfaces you will be working with. Water does not harm marble, but you need to be sure you dry windowsills well if they are of wood composition.

·        > Dust or vacuum the windowsill

·        > Usually, a mild solution of water and a few drops of dish soap applied with a soft cloth will take care of a windowsill. Rinse your cloth frequently to apply a fresh solution to all areas.

·        > Use a wet cloth with clear water to rinse the windowsills.

·        > Dry well, especially if the windowsills are wood.

·        > If there are stains, you can use a mild all-purpose cleaner, vinegar and water solution, or a magic eraser to lift the stain. Sometimes stains will not come out, especially if the sills are wood and whatever made the stain was wet such as wine, Kool-aid, or coffee.

·        > Weekly wiping of windowsills and quickly cleaning up spills will make the over-all job of cleaning windowsills a lot easier.

 

Tips for cleaning window tracks:

·        > Naturally, you have to open the windows. Check the tracks to see how clogged they are and if you will need a brush such as an old toothbrush, or even a metal pick (long nail works well) to clean out debris that has settled in the tracks.

·        > Dispose of debris with vacuum, dust buster, or small brush and dustpan.

·        > As such detritus as dead bugs and congealed pollen can clog your window tracks, you may need a putty knife to remove the build-up successfully. Wrapping the putty knife in a disposable cleaning wipe is helpful.

·        > Once the debris is cleaned out, you should go over the tracks with a putty knife wrapped in a disposable wipe.

·        > Leave the windows open for at least an hour to thoroughly dry the tracks. If this is not possible due to weather or allergies, use a blow hair dryer to speed the tracks dry.

·        > As mentioned above, the amount of time you have your windows open will determine how often the window tracks need to be cleaned.
