Chapter Three: Appoval

Chapter Three: Appoval

Emily waits anxiously for her father's approval.

‘’Dad, before you say anything I want to say that I want this so, so, so, so much!’’ I begged.

‘’I’ll speak about this with your mother, Emily. Let’s eat,’’ was all he said.

We went to the dining room, where we all ate in silence. Except mother and aunt Jane, of course. They just kept on merrily chatting as if nothing was wrong. I just hoped mother could convince him.

‘’Are you alright, Emily?’’ my mother asked, with a concerned look. ‘’You’re so quiet!’’

‘’I’m fine, I’m just a little tired. May I be excused?’’

‘’Of course. Have a good sleep, dear,’’ my mother said. I kissed her, dad and aunt Jane on the cheek and left for upstairs.

I whipped out my phone and started to text Dakota.

'Me: Hey, Bae!

Dakota: Hi!! So… how’d go?

Me: Mmmm…

Dakota: TELL ME!

Me: Yea yea geez. Dad wasn’t too pleased. He’s gonna talk 2 mother…

Dakota: Oops.

Me: yea…

Dakota: Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll work out. Your mother has good convincing skills.

Me: Ya think?

Dakota: Of course!

Me: Okay, then. I’m going to shower then crash. See you tomorrow?

Dakota: You can be sure of that, bestie. Good night!

Me: Good night!

I put my phone away and hopped into the shower. As I stood there, letting the warm water run over my body, I started to think about what really would happen. Did I actually want to be a model? Did I actually want to walk up and down a kind of stage and have photos taken of me all the time? Did I want to become ‘famous’? I didn’t know. It was just… becoming a model was just such an exciting idea. I had no idea if this was what I wanted to do with my life. All I knew was that if I declined this opportunity, I definitely wouldn’t get another. I stepped out of the shower and got dressed in my pyjamas. I surveyed myself in the mirror. I had wavy/curly white- blonde hair that reached to about two inches under my shoulder. My eyes were a stormy green/grey colour and framed by long curly black lashes. I’ve always liked my eyes. My nose was pretty normal and my skin. Well, I was rather proud of my skin. I took extreme good care of it, my mother had made me start when I was very young, and it was smooth and spotless. It was too fair for my taste, but you can’t have everything, hey?

‘’Admiring yourself?’’ a voice came from the door. I whirled around so fast I almost fell.

‘’Whoa, easy there, little sis,’’ my brother said, amused.

‘’Chase!’’ I yelled, jumping into his open arms and giggling like a six year old while he swung me round.

‘’What are you doing here?’’ I asked, once I was back on the ground.

‘’Missed me?’’

‘’No, but you didn’t answer my question,’’ I smirked.

He shook his head, laughing. ‘’I got an extra week off. Needed it, too!’’

My brother was a medical student at Reginald Orton College, the biggest medical college ever. He had a talent for science and it had always been his goal to help people. He was the exact right person to be a doctor.

‘’How’s college?’’

‘’Better that I ever imagined!’’ he exclaimed, as his eyes lit up. ‘’We get to practice all kinds of stuff and we get to do actual advanced science. Last week a student nearly blew up the lab because he mixed the wrong chemicals!’’

I raised an eyebrow. ‘’Did he come off looking like Seamus in Charms class?’’

‘’Huh?’’

‘’Harry Potter. Duh!’’

‘’Oh! Yes, now that I think of it, he did rather look like him,’’ Chase chuckled.

I laughed along with him. ‘’I’m glad to hear you’re happy, Chase,’’ I smiled, when we both had sobered up.

‘’What about you, Emily? How are you these days?’’

‘’Good! You know what?’’

‘’What?’’

‘’I got scouted today,’’ I told him and then waited for his reaction.

He furrowed his brows in confusion, and then suddenly realisation flooded his expression. ‘’You what?’’ he asked, in surprise.

‘’It was quite funny, really. I was shopping with Aunt Jane and mum and it was boring so I went with Dakota and Savannah…’’ I snapped my fingers in front of Chase’s face. ‘’Chase! Don’t zone out every time you hear Savannah’s name!’’

Chase had had a crush on Savannah ever since he saw her. He had never had a girlfriend, because of that. But because Chase was too shy to do anything except talk to her occasionally, and Savannah was a little oblivious as to his feelings, nothing had come of it.

‘’Now, where was I? Oh, we were in the shop and I found this really cute dress and I was showing it off to Dakota and Savannah… don’t zone out!’’

‘’Hey!’’ Chase protested. ‘’That was unnecessary, but continue…’’

‘’Well, this man came up and said I was pretty and that I had to work for him. Guess what? He is a scout from Ford Models!’’

Chase whistled between his teeth. ‘’Wow, sis. You really had some luck there!’’

Then he surveyed me with a critical eye. ‘’You have grown so much prettier since the last time I saw you. It’s been a year, Emily. People change so much in a year, don’t they?’’

‘’They do,’’ I confirmed. ‘’You look pretty handsome as well, Chase. Even though you’re my brother and I’m supposed to think you’re ugly.’’

Chase chuckled again. ‘’You’re sure you really want this, Emmie?’’

Emmie. Nobody was allowed to call me that except Chase. It was a nickname we had thought of when I was only very small. He was Chasey and I was Emmie.

It was then that I really made up my mind. ‘’Yes, Chase. I do. I really want this.’’

‘’Then I can’t wait to see you up there on the catwalk,’’ he smiled. ‘’But I don’t want any boys coming near you!’’

I smiled too and hugged him. Then my expression fell.

‘’Chase…’’ I trailed. ‘’Dad probably won’t let me. I bet he’s talking to mum right this minute!’’

‘’Well then, what are you waiting for?’’

I looked at him with a quizzical expression. ‘’What on earth do you mean?’’

‘’I guess it’s time for us to be immature and… eavesdrop!’’

Together we tiptoed down the stairs and to the living room doors. We heard voices coming from inside the room and paused in a good spot to listen.

‘’Clara, she’s only sixteen!’’ my father was saying.

‘’Old enough to do this. Maybe she really wants this, Tim,’’ my mother said. Chase gave me the thumbs up and I smiled.

‘’I know… but I… I don’t want my baby girl walking up there with all those boys staring at her… and thinking who knows what and…’’

‘’Ford Models is an excellent modelling company, Tim,’’ Aunt Jane spoke up, interrupting my father. ‘’And not in the way that they’re famous excellent. Ford Models is known for taking extremely good care of their models. Not one model has ever been heard to be anorexic. Also, they like to keep their models not too thin, and in good condition. They choose their models very carefully, so that they won’t have to alter anything with surgery. I think you should give them and Emily a chance.’’

I widened my eyes and stared at Chase. Okay, now I really take everything back I thought about her.

My father sighed in defeat. ‘’Alright. But only one chance. One thing happens to my baby girl and there’ll be no more modelling,’’ he said.

Chase grabbed my hand and we tiptoed back upstairs as fast as we could.

Soon enough, the door opened and my father came in. He looked a little tired and I felt guilty. I was causing him all this worry and stress.

‘’Alright, Emily. I’ll give you one chance. But one thing happens-’’ I didn’t even let him finish. I flew up from my bed and hugged him with all my might. I know, immature for a sixteen year old. But this sixteen year old is going to be a model!

I'm having this weird problem where in my text one sentence squeezes into the one above. Anybody got tips?

Wow, I reached the end in no time! I was just so absorbed in the story...
I'm impressed by how quickly you manage to post new chapters. And of such quality too! I literally have no suggestions, and that's something that doesn't happen very often. Well done!

It was really heartwarming to read about her reunion with her brother. You can just feel how much they care for each other. I loved the Harry Potter reference too!

As for the formatting problems you mentioned in the Author's Note, I used to have some similar problems too. I usually write in Word, and when I copy the text over it sometimes causes formatting errors. Anyways, what I found to help is to first paste your text into Notepad, and then copy that again and paste it into the submission form. This removes all formatting data, because Notepad doesn't support formatting. The downside is that you have to do the formatting (cursive text for example) all over in the submission form. I hope this helps :)
