Chapter 1A Chapter by Casey Francis"You must research Greek mythology. From there, you will choose a god of your choice to write a report on. This is assignment will be worth half your final grade for the semester. Any questions?" The teacher paced the front of the classroom, giving the junior English class it's biggest assignment of the semester. I sat in the back of the class listening patiently before asking any questions. Once the teacher had finished, I raised my hand. "Yes, Alex?" The teacher knew well enough that I was going to be the one asking the majority of the questions to be thorough with the assignment. "I was wondering if demigods were included in this? If we find one that interests us could we do that as well?" I asked the question as I rested my hand back down on my desk, my arm growing wary. "Yes, I suppose that is alright,"
was all the instructor gave in response. The teacher continued on with
the instructions. "You will have a partner for the actual research part of this assignment, but for the report you must write, that you must do alone. If you need any help feel free to ask me any questions." As my friend, Jen, and I exited the classroom we spoke about the new assignment. "Why did you ask about the whole 'demigods' thing?" She was questioning me and my reasoning for asking what she believed to be unnecessary questions. "Just in case someone, or even me, finds a demigod of sorts and wants to write what they learned about it. Better now than later in the game, right?" I raised my eyebrow with sarcasm as I questioned her belief about the situation. She carried on with her usual gossip that I have now adapted to block out. The rest of the day carried on as it normally would. When I got home I pulled out my
laptop to begin my research. If I knew one thing for sure when working
with Jen it was to get a head start on the assignment, otherwise her
procrastination would be the death of my grade. The research session was
very uneventful. Not a single god had so much as caught my attention. I
decided to look at images instead of endless reports of gods that were
very unreliable. My investigation was beginning to hit a dead end. As I scrolled through the images a peculiar one caught my attention. I clicked on the link and it led me to the local library's website. The image was from a book of Greek mythology. I quickly packed my laptop and books and ran to the library. I entered the building that was covered in books from the floor to the ceiling. I approached the desk in the middle of the room and asked the little elderly woman where i could find the section containing Greek mythology. She pointed me in the correct direction and I was on my way. I pulled out my laptop and attempted to find the title of the book. Eventually, I found it. The book was old and leather bound, a beautiful book just sitting on a bookshelf catching dust. It wasn't long before I found the picture. I glanced around, making sure no one was around to see. I tore the picture out of the book and put it back on the shelf, thanking the elderly woman on my way out. I called Jen and told her to pick me up so we could discuss the report. She pulled into my driveway and honked the horn to let me know she was there. I grabbed the picture and my laptop bag containing my books as well as my laptop. We went to our local cafe for dinner. She sat across from me, on her phone, most likely chatting up the local cutie. Jen was the typical girl that every boy adored and every girl envied. Well, every girl except me. I wasn't exactly a fan of all the attention I would probably receive if I looked like her. Her main group can't grasp why were friends. To be fair, neither could I. I just got along with her, which was more surprising than I let on. "Are you going to explain what this whole emergency is?" Her boredom dripping off of every syllable as she spoke. I finally glanced away from my screen to look at her. I pushed my glasses that were a bit too big for me back onto the bridge of my nose before speaking. "It isn't an emergency, for the last time. It's about the report. I think I found something. I want to figure it out," I watched her as she carelessly rolled her eyes. "I was also wanting to discuss with you what exactly you would like to research," I finished rolling my eyes back at her. "How about the dude we have a statue of in Town Square?" Her suggestion was surprisingly a good one. "'What' not 'How' and say that again. Did you actually suggest a good idea this time?" My sarcasm came naturally, and luckily she always got it. "Yes, Grammar Nazi, I did." She smiled as we went back and forth at each other. "He's a demigod. His father was Eros, god of desire and attraction. So naturally he would have the same effect his father did on women I'm guessing." I had already begun to look up our town's history to find more information on this demigod. Our town used this supposed demigod as a symbol of love which was supposedly how our town was founded. As we ate dinner and discussed how we were going to approach the research paper I continued to think about that image I had found. I wanted to know what it could possibly be. As we drove home we passed Town Square where the bronze statue stood in the middle. It was fairly late and everyone had turned in for the night. When I noticed a detail of the statue that matched that of the picture I yelled for Jen to stop the car. She slammed on her breaks worried that I had stopped the car for something important. I jumped out of my seat and ran to the statue. I held the picture up to where the statue matched the image. "What in the hell are you doing?" She ran up next to me, out of breath. I just stood, gaping. It couldn't be that simple. There had to be more to this than just a matching symbol. I slowly approached the statue, staring up at its face. If it were a human, he would have been handsome. I touched the symbol, unsure of what step to take next. "What exactly do you believe you are doing?" A voice rang out that neither I or Jen had recognized. "Alex, can we go? I don't want to get abducted by a pedo!" Jen's voice rang out in a shrill, panicking. "Alex? Is that short for something more exotic?" The voice asked more questions. "I'll ask again, what are you doing?" "I-I found this symbol and wanted to see if i could figure out what it was to and if there was more to that," my voice surprisingly stern. I turned to my frightened friend,"Jen, go get in the car. I'll catch up with you, okay?" "Yes, Jen, go sit in the car. Listen to your brave little friend." The voice continued to mock us. Not hesitating, Jen ran to her car. locking the doors, waiting on me. Everything fell quiet and I was stood in the haunting glow of the park lights. The voice rang out again, but this time it didn't seem to echo. It came from behind me instead. "I'm guessing you know who I am, yes?" "No. Who are you?" my voice seemed to be fading faster than my bravery. A deep throaty laugh erupted from what seemed like the statue. "Yes, you do. You know exactly who you're talking to. You're just a logical kind of person and think the chance of speaking to a demigod is slim to none. Am I right?" My eyes widened as what the male voice said began to sink in. "Up here, climb on top of the statue so I can see you." I didn't move. "I won't bite, I promise." I could hear the smirk in his voice. Slowly, I climbed up the statue, not sure what to expect. I made my way up the statue until I was nose to nose with the bronze son of Eros. I looked down at the ground to see how high up I was. When I turned back a pair of bright, piercing, grey eyes were staring back at me. I stared as the bronze peeled away before my eyes and before me stood a boy no older than me. "Well, that wasn't what I expected," I muttered, unable to look away from his eyes. "Nor I," was all he said before leaning in and planting a light peck on my cheek. "Thank you." I blushed as I realized I still had my arms wrapped around his neck in fear of falling on the concrete. I blushed more as I realized the state he was in. "C-can you put me down?" I spoke, nerves rattling my brain. He silently did so and glanced down at himself, obviously proud of the state he was in. "You'll need clothes. Follow me," my kindness fighting against the decision of leaving him in the park. "What the hell-why is he getting in my car? Why the heck is naked Alex?!" Jen began shouting her questions as if I would have the answers to them. "I don't know. He's getting in because he's coming with me. I'm going to give him some clothes. I can't just leave him in the park completely naked. I don't know what happened or why, please stop asking questions and just drive to my house." Everyone seemed on edge except for our new addition. Jen kept glancing back at him in the rear view mirror, a hint of desire and fear mixed filling her eyes. "Jen. Focus. On. The road." Tension creeping through my muscles. I rubbed my temples as we drove through town closing the distance between us and my house. When we finally arrived I thanked the gods that my older brother or my parents weren't home. As the demigod and I approached the door Jen peeled out of the driveway. I unlocked the door and led him to my room and told him to sit and not to move. I ran to my brother's room and grabbed some jeans and a black tee. I opened my bedroom door and walking in throwing the clothes at him, averting my eyes. "Thank you again," was all he said as he slipped into the clothing that fit him surprisingly well. The black t-shirt was fitted around his pecks and shoulders and fit snug against his easily visible abs. "You never did answer me about your name. Is it short for something else?" It was plain to see that he was trying to start a conversation. "Alexandria," I sighed, the name agitating me. "Do you not like your name?" His voice was soothing and almost seductive. "No, I don't. It doesn't suit me at all, I think." I retorted, rolling my eyes as I answered his questions. "It suits you more than you could ever imagine," he stood, smiling at me the whole time. "What's yours?" Rolling my eyes as a sign of obvious rejection of the compliment. "My name is Marcus," his smile grew, confident that his name was some untold secret that could solve world hunger. © 2013 Casey FrancisReviews
