Old Streetlight

Old Streetlight

A Poem by Casanova
"

a Love story stronger than Death

"

The old streetlight by the riverbank

tells of a story so long ago,

of a promise beteween 2 lovers

their love was not for show

Both were born at a time when Love

was written in ink from their soul,

with just a touch or a certain look

that only 2 Lovers would know

Only one glance did these two realize

that theirs was a love meant to be

that through whatever trials came their way

no other love did they want to see

A great war was raging at that time

"War to end all Wars" people did say,

19 years old and called to fight

they promised to marry one day

1916 he went and fought bravely too

when it was over he returned a man,

to find the love he waited so long

build the dreams they wrote in the sand

He returned to her house, called her name

tears filled his eyes as someone opened the door,

her Mother stood there, her hand on her mouth

she said a few words, he didn't want to hear more

"A bad fever took her life

but she told me to give you this"

a note written in her hand

signed and sealed with a kiss

She said" My Love I've waited for you

prayed you'd come back safe to me,

but now I'm dying here today

you are my true Love for eternity

When the wind blows through your hair

that will be my spirit next to you,

and when the sun shines on your face

may you feel the warmth of my Love too

By the streetlight or in the sand

you are my Love who I do miss,

but for now and for eternity

I give my last breath and unending kiss"

After that he didn't seem the same

some said time would heal a broken heart

yet life seemed empty without the love

he had never wanted to depart

A month later he was dead of a broken heart

a smile, yet a tear as he laid in the sand,

they buried him beside her near the riverbank

lovers forever were this woman and man

Now time has moved on and yet

there are some who still say,

that 2 people can still be seen at night

walking hand in hand by the the riverbank way

Their style of clothing is from long ago

her dress and his soldier's uniform as well,

no one gets close before they disappear

the 2 Lovers by a streetlight, as far as I can tell

Now dear reader let me ask you this

is there someone you love this very night?

don't let life take this chance from you,

seek out your true love before first light
