The Angels Ballad for Jean

The Angels Ballad for Jean

A Poem by Carrie Manor

Why are you staying?

God’s beloved soul,

hear! Can’t you hear?

The cry of the angels calling for you?

Lead we, you toward the light,

cry not, hast thou think you be forsaken?

Thy know well the abiding love of a truly ordained heart.

And through all thou’s drudge,

strife that thou made borne the sweetest fruits.

God showers you with his love,

for thy had found his book of wisdom,

thou not had bitten from the tree of knowledge.

Thus, thy knows

the true trials and truths of man.

Why are you staying,

wise man, why does thee stay?

Yes, the sweetest,

tenderest of fruits,

whom fashioned newly, a spring blossom bloom.

You remember the velvet caress,

of a soul tender and fresh

the way madame dew painted at morning dawn,

then when one came,

dare he pick your fruit that you nurtured?

Whom quickly over time blossomed the rose?

Dare he reap it?

Claim it as his own?

But hath thou ever before claimed a possession to know?

Yes, now, thy knows well!

Stay strong, for God’s final test,

let not end in despair,

abidingly thy shared the alms of God,

and know for life's last rich reward,

before thou’s eyes close for heaven’s gate,

there shall lay a garden

planted by the bishop, and grew

by the grand heavenly Father,

wait longer, wise man!

To see the crops sow,

gathered in the arms of love,

guided by a bounty feast.

The angels greatest triumph,

hear the bells dong!

Author's Note

Carrie Manor
I based this poem on the death of Jean Valjean, from Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. The poem talks about how Jean knows he's soon to die ( the angels are calling him) but he longs to see Cosette, whom I've described as the fruits, flowers, e.t.c, the one "picking his fruit" is suppose to be Marius. I have described this scenario as Jean Valjean's last test of God's. If he passes, which mean he hasn't given up hope that God will let him see Cosette, after all he has worked for, and all the love he has given for God, then this, with all the other changes he's accomplished he will then have made the "greatest triumph of the angels"
