Comfort Food Kissing

Comfort Food Kissing

Kissing you is like comfort food,

like being twelve again. I have

not been comfortable since I was

twelve. You know that, right?

It's like sweatpants on a rainy night,

like building a fort behind what

my grandma used to call the divan.

Like a stick of oleo cut

into thin squares and laid on top of

cherry cobbler. Kissing you is like that--

the secret to the perfect crust.

Why did we wait so long to do it?

And now that we have, we still

haven't fucked. What the f**k will

that be like? I hope it's nothing more

than homemade noodles--the secret

to their yellowness is merely dye--

and mashed potatoes with heavy cream.

Being twelve and in awe of how

something can taste so good.

Waiting to know every trick-filled recipe.

I like this idea. The idea that kissing someone feels like "home" in a sense. The first time I read this, I couldn't help but think about my childhood and the little things that made up my daily activities and how, even when stumbling across them now, I'm reminded of how simple life was back then. The second time I read this though, I caught the "I have not been comfortable since I was twelve. You know that, right?" and the whole piece immediately took a more heartbreaking and a little darker of a tone. Either way, I like this a lot.
