What do the Mantis Pray for

What do the Mantis Pray for

A Poem by CarpeNoctem

What do the mantis pray for?

Late at night do you ever ponder the purpose of those prayers?

Or wonder if yours are anything like theirs?
Maybe they pray the prayers no man ever will
Maybe only they can with stand the weight of that gravity
Perhaps they just pray for longevity
Or it could be they're continuing the prayers of people who've passed
Parent praying for child with reverence
What if that's the reason for the posture and stance
Is it possible they bend and kneel
Pleading a profound utterance
Do you think they're capable of that kind of competence?
Heaven only knows what those creatures whisper
When the hours loiter and my mind wonders
I often imagine a mantis is my acting stand in
Fervently he prays for the things I should be
When I am weak he remains solid and steady
Its usually about that time I hear the rapping of a visitor, and my spine shivers
Reality lets himself in to make sure I'm reminded
They're only bugs, so I'm compelled to reply come no more uninvited
