Cold

Cold

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

It's so cold
yet I can hear
the sound of the waves
and they soothe my soul

Loneliness consumes me
yet there are no tears
I don't allow myself
to cry anymore

I am a child of the light
yet darkness surrounds me
Suffocates me
in its heartless embrace

I long to be free
yet my desire traps me
Holds me captive
in a world of unfulfilled dreams
and pointless longings

When I am no more
my name will be nothing
but a forgotten memory
on the lips of a few
who dared to care

The world will turn
until the day of its demise
Just as my flesh will age
until the day I die

Until I am but a speck
in the eye of creation
A collection of atoms
and molecules
flying through time and space
To a destination
that is known by God alone

I want to fly away now
but gravity viciously
holds me down
Refuses to release me
to set me free

So here I remain
trapped by despair
Crying on the inside
Invisible tears
Playing tag with the stars
while I wait out the years

Reminds me of sea walls I've sat upon at 2 and 3 and 4 AM, and how chill is the sea breeze heavy with the ocean's dampness. And you watch the waves rush ashore endlessly, clouds scudding on the starlit horizon, moon's glow on lucky days - shimmering in the troughs... and it's sooo empty and loud enough my head fills with ...hurt...

I understand...

Yes you do I can see that. You've captured it so well in your words. Thank you

' Loneliness consumes me ~ yet there are no tears ~ I don't allow myself ~ to cry anymore '

The tragedy of your poem seems, for me, to lie in that short stanza. It holds the pain of loneliness so deeply that they scar thereafter line after line after line. Life can inflict real hell into and around the human spirit, all sorts of causes, reasons. The only remedy is living on, walking on wet grass, and challenging life to wrap you in sun rather than fog. Happens truly, it does. I promise you.

Superbly written to the point of making me cry, understated yet more than explicit in tone, CArolann. Hugs.

Thanks so much Emma Joy that means a lot to me. xx
Loneliness is a cancer that eats away at the Spirit.....don't let it consume you....I know how you feel....really I do. And just so you know, you will never be forgotten....=)

This made me think.
I am a child of the light
yet darkness surrounds me
Why is it that darkness is always considered bad? I mean, it's always there. But light isn't.

Refuses to release me
to set me free
Freedom is a concept, just like beauty is. Can you really be free?
Your poem made me contemplate on many things... it's a good read.

Life can set you free or be the weight that hold you down. I recognize this place Carolann and I feel the chill that comes from these words. I spend many of my waking moments seeking the warmth but it is hard when the place is so damn cold. I hope the light finds you for you deserve the life that you desire.

Thanks so much. I'm glad you could feel and understand this.
And yet, He knew you and He loved you before you were even born. He knows every thought of your mind...even the very hairs on your head are numbered...

Lol thanks Mark. Sorry if I killed your buzz :)
I felt sad while reading this. It captures the essence of loneliness well. Did you mean to say "speak" or was it supposed to be "spark"?
