Doing Time

Doing Time

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

It's over now
I've waited too long
It's too late for trying
all purpose has gone

Sadness has seeped
into the cracks of my soul
The cruelty of the world
has taken its toll

I want to hide away
for the rest of my days
Slowly vanish from sight
as the shadows fade

Only a few would notice
if I was no longer there
Life would go on
not many would care

Memories drift away
on the morning breeze
My life falls away
like the autumn leaves

Pain parades its way
through my veins
Despair torments my spirit
in it's deadly game

Love eludes me
in it's evil dance
Staying just out of reach
never giving me a chance

Lustful creatures corner me
on every side
I fight for my virtue
to stay alive

But the will to go on
grows weak within
The struggles too great
against evil and sin

I grow weary of sorrow
of walking alone
Of having no one to trust
no place to call home

I want to shut it all down
and walk away
Escape from people
and the games they play

But I have to go on
the choice is not mine
My task won't be over
until I have done my time

A realistic ending to the poem. In life we have little choice but to move on and tried. Thank you for sharing the the excellent poetry.

I love your writing style. The abab rhyme scheme seals it for me and you wrap it up in such beautiful prose and straightforward themes. A pleasure for me.

This is the most honest piece of poetry I've read so far. I have feelings of this nature regularly. You never know whats around the corner. Patience and faith.

Yes always. Thank you
Loved the description. The last stanza reminded me of the message delivered by Robert Frost's poem 'Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening', that we must go on till we have served our purpose.

Thank you that's great.
penance to match our guilt...holds us like moths to a flame.

Yet penance in innocence is worse.

I think we can all relate to every stanza in your poem. THis one stood out to me the most. I felt like this the other day at work! Work to me is like prison...I'm a slave to work, for money... I really think you have a lot of powerful emotions and images in this and I think that it is easy to understand and clear.

You are welcome...:)
each stanza has such pain in its words... this is the emotion Carolann you bring with each poem you write. Amazing read, this piece explores what it feels like to be human and survive the toll of life.
