The Art of Romance

This is one of my older poems, I hope you enjoy.

I'm only human 
I admit with regret 
Trying to find 
true happiness 

Searching for something 
that may not be there 
Loving the people 
who will never care 

Knowing that one day 
from this I could die
For free love is over 
now the price is too high 

So how do you live 
in a world full of fears 
When there's no point in trying 
and no time for tears 

Where you make a mistake 
and there's no second chance 
Where games have taken over 
the art of romance 

There once was a time 
where love was so true 
Where life had more meaning 
and respect was there too 

But now sex is the game 
on all the guy's minds 
True love's lost forever
destroyed by mankind

Awesome. The pessimism radiates through your words and colors in the pages of the world, and the nostalgia is great as well. This is a very interesting view on romance, and was very fun to read. I like that it also kind of displays a victim mentality,
"I'm only human
I admit with regret
trying to find
true happiness"
as though the condition of being human is holding you back from the sparks and passion and bond that is being searched for. I also love the end,
"true love's lost forever
destroyed by mankind"
because it steals away from the victim and takes some accountability. It shows that whatever has happened to the pure beauty of true love has happened because of those who are "only human". Anyway, all of this is just a really long drawn out way for me to say, "awesome poem, man."

Seems our lives are controlled by fiction ie. books and movies; zombies, blatant porn and thirty deaths in the first few scenes are the norm and consequently considered acceptable. Gentleness and charm has been shoved out of play, it's not fashionable. But.. but.. maybe we should push and feel for it. Inclined to think there is romance out there, it's a case of being in the right places with the right atmosphere.. not the singles bar or the local chat.up room.
You write with great power, you know.. and technically very tightly, good meter and all, your heart's so often on display, that takes courage. as well as skill.

I enjoyed this write Carolann! it is so true that nowadays romance seems to be a dying act, but there are guys out there that still romance their women. I have one of those men :) It is just harder to find nowadays, but they are out there if you search. Lovely poem!

I can relate to this because I know a lot of people in their 40's and 50's who have just given up. They'd rather walk on glass barefoot then play the game. Its too depressing and time consuming. They can't take the heartache anymore. And what do we expect when Fifty Shades of Grey is accepted as romance by many women. No offense to anyone who enjoyed the books but I found nothing romantic about it... its erotica.

I agree, I haven't read it all but from what I did read it just seems to be rather derogatory towards women and nothing more than a book full of cheap thrills. It's a scary world out there now, morals have gone out the window and if you go on a date sex is almost expected. Which is one reason that I don't date now,it's no fun spending an evening fighting some sleaze off all night. Anyway thank you for your review. I'm glad you where able to relate to it.
