The Fellowship of Man

The Fellowship of Man

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

People can be so cruel
when they don't get what they want
You think they are your friend
but then they shut you off

As soon as you don't fulfil
all their wants and needs
They just stab you in the heart
leave your soul to bleed

Whatever happened to friendship
to the fellowship of man
To caring for your neighbour
lending a helping hand

These days we only give
when we want something in return
Genuine love and friendship
is impossible to earn

This is how the world
thinks and acts today
Real charity and goodness
are from a bygone age

Lets open up our hearts
give to those in need
Shine a little light
let go of all our greed

Lets offer up our friendship
expecting nothing in return
Give a little kindness
live and love and learn

Offer help, hope and warmth
without expecting a single thing
And we might just be surprised
at how much joy giving brings

Outstanding. Both the skill with which you wrote and the all-important message are excellent. Having grown up in poverty, this subject is very close to my heart. Some may call it kharma, but whatever it may be, I believe a score is kept, and that which one sows, so shall they reap. If they offer compassion and charity, it will come back to them. This same message is found in the Bible.

Thank you Sam, yes it is found in the bible and we do reap what we sow. :)

Very true and wise words, there is too much cruelty and too little kindness in human nature and in the world, by nature we are too competitive

Beautiful poem. but this selfish behaviors were there before the coming of Christ.I think our generation is much better than the previous generations in matter of kindness and giving a helping hand.

Yes in some ways maybe but still I see a lot of people ignore those in need. Thank you :-)
This is so true!! I'm not very old, but in the time i've spent here i've noticed that even at home things seem to be taking a turn for the worse... This really touched home with me, great write! Thank you xx

Thank you so much Jessie. xx :)
I miss the good days of long talks and good conversation. I did a lot of poetry reading in the early nineties. After the poetry reading. We would coffee or whatever. Talk till the sun appeared. People are in a hurry. Lack of human concern and kindness in our problem today. We need to slow down. Could help a friend with a listening ear. I do understand the statements in the poem. I like the ending to the excellent poem.

Thank you so much.
Lovely piece with a lovely message; you make a very good point - if only more people could live like that... I particularly enjoyed the 2nd stanza - very well written :)

Wonderfully expressed, Carolann. The subject of much distress for me for over a year. Speechless - unable to understand the situation. I've warped so many things in my head trying to understand this quickly twisted friendship that disappeared in the blink of an eye. I am just now getting a grasp of my mind to let it all go, realizing their demons, or whatever the case may be, are not mine. I must let go of what I cannot change. I've said that many times over the course of time, but until you're ready... The words mean little.

I just wanted to scream Hallelujah after reading this! Words of wisdom, we should pay it forward and try being kinder. Inspiring read, nice one.

I agree 110% with this poem! This was so well written and has a GREAT message in it. It's sad how the world has turned all greedy.
It's so rare to see a stranger on the street and get a smile nowadays.

Yes so true Miranda, Thank you :)
Inspiring poem, with truth. We should all be more selfless and consider others.
Though I do disagree with "Real charity and goodness are from a bygone age".
Every time I read or watch something about the past, I see all the wars and the violence. Men lived uncivilized like animals and killed each other over nothing.

But the rest of it is true, thanks for writing this poem so all who reads it can make a difference =D
