Humanity

Humanity

A Poem by Carolann Dowsett

The world is shallow and heartless

full of contemptuous disrespect

We have turned away from love

allowed lustful desire to overtake our flesh

Blinded by our own egos

we use people then just throw them away

like so much wasted garbage

left to rot in the stench of emotional decay

What has become of us

how did we fall so far

Once we strove to attain the highest star

to be something greater

than all that we are

Nighttime is closing in on our souls

darkness threatens to take hold of our hearts

We walk through the shadows

covered under a cloak of vain pride

justifying our actions with senseless logic

and pitiful lies

We are but children of the night

lost to the fire

helpless victims of our own needs

and carnal desires

When will we grow

when will we learn that life is but a moment

in time and space

a brief flicker of humanity that touches our souls

before eternity opens it's arms

and we fall forever into its unknown embrace

What will become of us

when the end comes

will the cold fingers

of the eternal dark

consume us

and leave its deadly mark

Or will we be lifted up

in the eternal light of God’s glory

where we will be forever safe

able to rest at last

in the Lord’s loving embrace

The choice is ours alone to make

yet still we walk around blind

unknowing

uncaring

disembodied spirits wandering aimlessly

with no real peace of mind

Lost souls trapped

in a godless void

worshiping our flesh

while we allow our souls

to starve to death

We feed greedily

upon the lies and deceit

created by our own hearts

yet from this no nourishment

enters into our inner most parts

We need to enter into the light

turn away from the darkness

before we are lost forever

in an endless night

Eternity is but a moment away

a single breath

a single heartbeat

that fails to bring life to our flesh

A brief moment exists

between here and forever

A single moment lies

between our lives in the flesh

and the eternity that awaits us

on the other side of death

We must awaken

from our deadly slumber

open our eyes wide

before we are torn asunder

Look and see all that lies

beyond the fabric of life and death

before it’s too late

and we are put to the test

We need to surrender into the arms of eternity

when our time on this earth is over

knowing that we will be forever free

in the loving arms of our Eternal Father

Not lose our souls to insanity

In the place where the lost all grieve

because of our lack of humanity

and all we refused to believe

I agree with your poem. When we lose concern for life. What become of the goals of men?
"We need to surrender into the arms of eternity
when our time on this earth is over
knowing that we will be forever free
in the loving arms of our Eternal Father"
I believe people don't realize we pay for our sins in the end. We will reap the good and bad in a life. Better to walk with kindness and hope. Then hate and greed. Thank you for the amazing poetry.

Forgive my expression but HOLY S**T Carolann, WOW!
"Blinded by our own egos

like so much wasted garbage

This poem screams hope and displays to us what a messed up world we live in, all around us we walk neck deep in sin. I love your writing it always describes so much pain but it also show the light. You're a story teller, your ability to take me on a journey is amazing and i've claimed that from day one of reading you. Love your work < 3

A riveting write. It does appear that many people have become lost within this world and priorities have changed from virtue to materialism and "me"ism. However, there are still many good people among us. It may be just a little harder to see their light within the midst of all this surrounding darkness.

Yes you are right. Thank you :)
"Behold the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that you shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone; yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye shall have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

you're welcome...=)
I agree with the message you were portraying throughout this poem. People in the world nowadays don't get it. I try and make changes in people's lives in any way I can. It's my way of proving humanity has the ability to change!

That's great and yes its true we do what we can as individuals.
Humanity has slipped and is now on life support... I blame a lot on the media separating us into different categories instead of showing that we are all humans and deserving of respect and compassion.

Yes very true the media have a lot lot to answer for.
I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who said (although some dispute him as the source), "It is not the years in our lives but the life in our years." Sometimes we need to pick up that bleak blanket we hide beneath and breathe in the sunshine.

This is another highly emotive piece of writing.

Yep it sure is and hey I'm just getting started :-P
Extremely affecting Carolann...the entire read is riveting, not sure I can pick one stanza I like the best but these words slammed into me...

a brief flicker of humanity that touches our souls
before eternity opens it's arms
and we fall forever into its unknown embrace

It's awe inspiring...Brava!

Loved it, my pleasure. ;-)
This is very true, as we don't care much about others and how they may feel, its a lovely poem though
