Wow! So this is coming from the heart, huh? I have to admit, this made me laugh, not because I was genuinely amused, but because I've kind of been saying exactly the same thing for absolutely years. To be quite honest, I thought I was the only one...
That said, I have to agree wth some of the other reviewers, and whilst I agree whole-heartedly with what you're saying, you do kind of take a shovel to this one and beat the reader round the head with it, you know? From my point of view, I didn't mind (did I mention I agree with you?) but some of the 'sheep' are obviously going to have problems. Thanks for making me smile, though.
You are dead on sister ... I have fought those systems you speak of in regards to my daughter ... who ... is perceived to have learning difficulty ... so why not label her ... when really she is one of the old souls in this lifetime and gravitates to the artistic side of life ... I refused the Ritalin route and continue to advocate for her added help within an educational system that is clearly set up for one type of child ... that not being my daughter...so thanks for the read! You truly should write a column somewhere!
Yes, I've wondered the same thing but I've yet to have time to thing about the situation of everything in the world. This is inspiring in the sense that I also question things like that, such as the attack on the twin towers and why people accpeted it so quickly that it was terrorism when it was because of so many conviniences that the U.S. government isn't being blamed. But, yes, a very nice piece and well thought out. =)
I have to agree with you about the overwhelming number of commericals exhorting the virtues of this wonder medication or that one but the list of side effects always makes me wonder who in their right mind would trade one illness for nine others, which is what it appears to me that you're going to be doing if you take this so-called 'medication'
That having been said, I think you would have made your point much better if you had set this aside for a day or so and come back to it with a cooler head and a more rational and clincal eye. The ideas you make are sound and should be explored but the bold type and the use of caps to emphasize certain words come off as screaming for attention when a softer voice would make people lean in to listen more closely to what you have to say.
Aside from a few punctuation mishaps, every now and then, I enjoyed this piece. It made me reminisce of my days as a youth, where my father once thought there was something wrong with me when I wanted to wear whatever I wanted to wear, or do whatever I wanted to do. He didn't take into account the fact that I was a budding teenager; if it didn't run with his plans for me, then I was crazy: he doesn't play sports? what's wrong with him?!
it's funny i've now come across this piece you've written.. i was just wondering to a friend the other day if it was me or were there more and more and MORE advertisements for extraneous pills and whatnot on the t.v. and radio these days (increasing at a rapid pace). of course, this would mean nothing if it didn't also correspond with a seriously insane rise in the cost of simply keeping yourself minimally healthy. (gosh..if we don't see what they're up to then we're the sheep.)
trading sanity for an alternate perspective is a tough call for some.. but personally i like being an insomniac. (you, friend, might dig my poem "SO..". it's quite short but i also have a blog/rant that explains it at the bottom of my page. cool..)
i'm digging your words. you make a good strong point. "No one is actually supposed to have a reaction to disturbing circumstances..". Heck yeah. tell em.

I'm not going to critique this piece, simply because I have zero experience with essays. I am, however, going to provide you with my thoughts. In regards to A. E., I have no doubt he would have never achieved recognition as being a genius if he lived in the world of today. No, he would have been given an emotional altering drug/prescription at an early age and he would have been intelligently stilted because of it. Is this world of today going to produce any geniuses? On the whole, probably not...reason being, because society is actively shutting down the greatest organ one needs to be a genius...our brain. However, there are exceptions to every rule, and somewhere there is a society that doesn't have access to such wonderful breakthroughs as ritalin, prozac, and numerous other mood "stabalizers." So, I suppose we can only hope that a genius or two makes it through the muck.
On a personal note, I believe that our body is inately equiped to deal with personal emotions and trauma if we will only allow it to...before we start medicating the symptoms. Albeit, in a world where everyone wants things fast and easy...for most, it's handier to simply swallow a pill and (superficially) make things better.
my brother says there's a fine line between genius and madness and i'm tipping over one side. i feel your anger. one of the young 'uns that i hang out with just began his medication routine. bummer. while i feel your point, the lawyer in me hates rants. i hear them all day so i don't like them in my personal life. i read all of yours though, out of respect. your profile intrigued me so i worked through it. good points, i look forward to interesting posts.
Einstein DID have trouble with his education, but just maybe that's a part of what pushed him to be grand, people grow and excell BECAUSE of thier differences just as often as IN SPITE of them. A man who thinks twice as fast as everyone around him may well be incomprehensible to everyone he meets, but could you call it a handycap? I agree, "aid" shouldn't be forced on anyone, but should they want this change then by Goddess, let them have it. Cudoes CM.
