My best friend, Anika, flounced over to me in her fancy Christmas dress. It was a metallic green color and had a satin feel to it. She always felt so proud of herself when she wore dresses because usually she wears jeans and a t-shirt every single day. She’s the type of person who hates dresses but she likes to prance around in them and pretend she’s a princess. I was the only who knew that about her besides her parents. Everyone else judged her and thinks she’s vicious and mean. Anika is nice to me and is nice to a lot of people. It’s just her dark appearance that throws everyone off. Her jeans are usually black and her t-shirts are usually gray or a dark shade of purple.

“So how’s the party going?” I asked her. I nibbled on a piece of shrimp, not paying any attention to what I was saying. She answered back immediately with a high voice that doesn’t belong to her. Parties can totally mess her up.

Anika snapped her fingers in front of my face. Looking directly at her I rubbed my eyes and asked, “Sorry, what?” She gave me an “I’ll-tell-you-later-but-you-should-have-been-listening” smirk.

As soon as she looked away from me I began looking at it again. It was translucent shade of pink sparkled in the spotlights. It was in a glass case and stood on the stage like it was the star of the show. I looked closer suddenly when I saw my reflection in it. Behind me was the giant Christmas tree they put up every year at this party. From the beginning of the party I had been so occupied watching it that I hardly noticed the beautiful Christmas tree.

Anika interrupted my thoughts about its beautiful shape. “What are you staring at?” she asked me. She stared at me like I was crazy and then chased after some of her guy friends. Oh, she would find out what I was looking at. The host of the party, my dad’s best friend, Will, leaped up on the stage and stood next to it, cautiously.
