Meet The King

Meet The King

A Poem by Carl

Jimmy stepped off the bus

In nineteen sixty three

Dreams in his head and hope in his heart

Memphis Tennessee

Guitar in hand and a tale to tell

And a bunch of songs to sing

But Jimmy's only wish in life

Was just to meet The King

Now nobody stepped on his blue suede shoes

As he played his guitar

Singing songs and meeting girls

He was the next big star

He loved the live performance

The adulation it would bring

And as he played the dream it burned

Just to meet The King

Now Gina worked the Diner

Serving coffee and clearing plates

How she loved it when Jimmy played

The atmosphere that it creates

She thinks back to that morning

When Jimmy came strolling in

And The Queen of the Diner

Had finally met her King

And so they left in sixty four

The Diner a memory

The two of them headed south

Soon to become three

Gina knew she'd found her man

Jimmy a love so true

And there by the Graceland Gates

Gina gladly said "I do"

They lost a child in sixty five

Never recoverd some will say

Gina's eyes never burned again

After that fateful day

Gina mourned her tragic loss

It drove Jimmy to the end

Until an empty bar and a bottle of Jack

Became his only friend

Now he will tell a story

To any who will listen

About Rock n Roll and heartbreak

As his eyes begin to glisten

But his speech it will become all slurred

As he asks "Have you come far?"

The lights were beginning to fade

On this once shinning star

Jimmy caught a fever

In the winter of sixty seven

Gina tendered him day and night

As he spoke of seeing heaven

And as Gina softly sang to him

To gently ease his pain

Jimmy slowly closed his eyes

Not to wake again

Ten years passed and Gina remarried

But rememberd her dear departed

She's back at the Diner

Where her story started

She turns up the radio

To catch what it said

The King Of Rock n Roll

Elvis Presley was dead

Gina thought for a while

As a smile spread across her face

Jimmy's and her story

Started and ended in this place

And somewhere inside Heaven

Up where the Angels sing

Jimmy's wish has come true

And he has finally met The King

So many dreams expected under that Texaco Star. This is truly a song in itself. Bittersweet when dreams are chased for a lifetime and irony unfolds at the end. Ultimately, Jimmy lived his life and he probably ponders how happy he is to be over this stepping stone we call life.

This was a unique piece for you and I am in admiration of how you wrote a story and a song within a poem. Very well done and I am proud of how you use your pen and create magic.
