The Apartment BuildingA Poem by CarelineA short anecdote about my childhood. The Apartment Building in the distance brings to mind many memories.
It does not stand with the other buildings scattered across the Apple, Rather, it stands firmly grounded In the earths of Co-Op City.
It calls to mind A different time. A simpler time. Long, long before I met you, and you, and you too, All of you. I was just a confused girl Who stood alone.
Alone with her wild imagination. And characters from fantasy novels became her best friends, as she pored through, book after endless book.
She was six, seven, eight, Nine.
She spent her days there, watching her older brother Fry his brains out, playing video games, Nonstop.
But I can’t deny The worlds he helped to Transport me to.
I was a soldier, destined to kill the alien Invaders. I was a boy, with a magical KeyBlade. I was a bandicoot, Smashing crates and collecting Apples.
I was everything and Everyone, In those small, fleeting moments.
So don’t mock me, When I say that I love To watch people Play video games. ~*~ In Co-Op City, I came into my own.
We were two kids, Brother and sister, sitting side by side, Huddled by the television. And fried chicken drumsticks, wrapped in paper towel, never ceased to fill our tiny hands, no matter how much we ate.
To this day, I can still remember the comforting smell of a Hispanic home.
I can still remember the family I left behind. ~*~ I look behind me, and I see the little girl standing there, her big brown eyes, Staring into mine.
The wonder and awe of the world in her eyes, Hasn’t changed. © 2014 CarelineAuthor's Note
