Shades

A Story by Caradoc
"

"I've fallen from a distant star. Come back, compelled because of love. I'm caught between two different worlds. I long for one more night on earth..." -Fallen, Delerium

"

She watched him, from the other side of the Veil.

Every day since that night she had been with him; she'd never left his side. It was a hard thing to endure, the place she found herself in, but she couldn't seem to let go. For so long she had carried him in her heart.

How could she let a little thing like death get in the way?

The world in which she now existed was made up
of shades of grey. It was like someone had put a filter over her eyes. Everything which had life and color had been drained and yet, she sometimes caught glimpses of the way she knew things to truly be. There was the blue of his eyes when he smiled, the subtle red glints in his beard as the sunlight streamed in through the open windows; little things that seemed to be reaching through from the other side.

And there were the emotions. In her world of grey she could hardly feel a thing other than her longing, loneliness, and love. But as she had watched him over the years, she'd gotten flashes of the things he felt, whenever she was near and what he felt was strong. His feelings crossed the barrier to her.

It had soon become clear, it was only when he thought of her. Oh, but as sweet as the small tastes of his emotions she had experienced were, they were also bitter and sharp. Although love and joy were feelings she had stolen from time to time, over the years the things she'd begun to get more from him were sorrow and pain.

And guilt.

So she was here with him, once again, at their spot. It was the anniversary of her death and he visited it every year. Where others made pilgrimages to her grave, he came here. This place was special, had been special, to them. It was their little getaway, a retreat they'd often visited together when life had gotten too much to bare.

"I'm sorry," he sighed as he looked out over the city. "I didn't know what to say to you then. Your admission took me by surprise." His voice cracked a little as he turned to the frozen lake. Even though she was right there in front of him, he looked right through her. "I'm so sorry I didn't tell you then and now...now you can't hear the words. But...I'm gonna say them anyway."

Emotion reached her then; a feeling so strong and pure it was unmistakable. She'd carried it in her breast for many, many years.

"I love you too," he whispered to the frost.

She was blinded by the color...
