Last Words

A Story by Caradoc
"

"“I am going to seek a great perhaps; draw a curtain, the farce is played out.” -François Rabelais

"

"I love you so much," she breathed in the winter chill, frost filling the space between them. "So intensely that it scares me."

Her admission, shocking, had him shivering, even though he was
warmly dressed, used to the cold. There had been signs of course, subtle hints she'd dropped, but he'd never truly believed...

"But I also know you never have," she continued, looking up into the sky, bathed in the soft starlight. "And never will, feel the same way. You've found your soul mate, and it isn't me."

Those words, for some reason, they drove a spike through his heart. His own voice was trapped. He was frozen in place as if caught up by some invisible hand that held him still. Emotions were tangled, spiraling wildly out of control, like the snow that had fallen earlier. It blanketed the bank of the lake; their spot.

"All we'll ever be is just friends," she said, voice cracking from the sobs she tried to hold back. "And even though every breath I take burns that knowledge a little deeper into my heart, I'm okay with that." Finally she turned and gave him a sad smile, letting the tears fall and form icy tracks that glimmered with light, iridescent. "I can take the pain. It's worth it, to be just your friend.”

Those were the last words she ever spoke to him. It had been many years ago when it happened. His best friend died that very same night. Her car ran afoul of a patch of black ice. She'd lost control of the vehicle and it careened into a tree.

She'd been on the way home from their spot.

Alone, he stood by the tree on the hill overlooking the city, his back to that very same lake. It was only now that he realized why her words had caused him so much pain.

He'd loved her too...

Wow! This was truly beautiful Caradoc :)

Love is love, and the sort of love viz the deepest is often undescribable.. No matter how eloquent or expressive one is, he fails to express. Its just the heart that feels n peceives that beauty, n the lips shine in happiness, nodding a smile :)

I am glad I read such a piece!
And for the gal's part in ur story, you really described her well. She dint just had a loving heart, but hers heart was also the one that could patiently wait for her turn, and accept the guy, the way he was .

Your last/ ending stanza, also proved that he loved her too:) which I feel was the sweetest part of their incomplete, yet beautifully complete story.

Well done!

Thank you.
It's like when you're in a dream, and you want to scream, need to, but even though you open your mouth, no sound comes out.

haha, I am glad you have turned your sad emotion into muse, I in that matter would have done the same or that's just how i write...

a very sad case of unrequited Love, somehow in each of us, passes this kind of love, perhaps that is why many could sympathize to its sentiments. An relatable piece, surely worth reading...
