Happy Today

Happy Today

A Poem by Captain Chris
"

The agony of missed liaisons

"

Michael sits and slowly grows older,

His sandwich curls up and his coffee gets colder,

Outside the rain runs down Andrea’s shoulder.

No one gets happy today.

He booked the train a month before,

Took a cab to the station from his office door,

Stopped at a bank and withdrew some more,

You couldn’t buy happy today.

She left early, but the buses were late,

Quietly shutting the garden gate,

Hoping and prayer that Michael would wait,

But no one gets happy today.

Michael sat waiting, waiters were staring,

Michael had long ago given up caring,

Tried to remember what she would be wearing,

On her way to get happy today.

But the rain kept falling and the bus never came,

So he put on his coat and covered his shame,

Thought how these days always ended the same,

When no one gets happy today.

Andrea knows that he will be gone,

But she won’t blame him, he’s done nothing wrong,

A person can only wait so long,

So no one gets happy today

She knows how it feels to wait and worry,

Knows how things drag when you’re trying to hurry,

And how many times has she tried to say sorry

For trying to be happy today?

So each one returns to a home, to a bed,

Each one lays down a lonely head,

Thinking of all the words never said,

And they’ll try and get happy,

Tomorrow.
