Nintendo Switch - Brief ThoughtsA Story by Colby GallantMy brief thoughts on the now-released Switch. I also address the former console launches on previous Wii consoles. The Nintendo switch is upon us. Have I had a chance to play it? Yes, do I own it? No. I can’t help but reminisce on the launch of the WiiU, 2012, I was eleven at the time and I was way too edgy to be caught playing the latest Mario game. Well, fast-forward four years and you can still catch me turning on the WiiU for a game of Mario Kart. That being said, the poor advertising of the WiiU left people scratching their head and wondering what exactly Nintendo’s new console entailed or if it was even a new console, or just an add-on to the pre-existing Wii. Of course those claims were laid to rest early-on. Some people still thought it wasn’t up to par with the pre-existing generation of consoles. If you ask me, Nintendo couldn’t have picked a worse time for the launch, as the One and PS4 were fastly approaching. Even when the Wii released in 2006, it was disappointing, or underwhelming to say the least with its maximum 480P display and mandatory motion controls, which deterred most gamers to PS3 and the 360. That being said, while the aspects were somewhat of a let-down, the console itself was commendable for its innovation and its offering of something different. The Switch is golden. We are in the midst of the current-gen of gaming. People are quite happy with their current set of gaming-ware, but a new option is nice, especially one with versatility. The Switch boasts a seamless blend between portable and console gaming. Although this, for lack of a better term, gimmick seems to works nicely, it is notable that in its portable state the specs are not so much lacking, but diminished from its docked state. Not to say its not playable on the go, it surely is, just don’t expect the flawless frame-rate you would expect from a home console. But who’s expecting that? Nintendo’s brainchild does was it was set out to do in the best way possible, having played Breath of the Wild, it’s amazing what this device can run as that game seems endless! In conclusion, the Switch has a better shot than WiiU ever did, hopefully Nintendo will not only focus on its solid first-party games, but also provide a better support from third-party developers, something the WiiU severely lacked in. © 2017 Colby GallantAuthor's Note
