City, Part I

City, Part I

A Poem by Jeremy Michael White

Strolling along this foggy sidewalk

Guided by the faint glow of streelamps

Choking on the smog, still working hard

Cigarette has become a cylinder of ash - lost in thought

Taxis pass by escorting folks through the city

"Open" flashes dimly from an alleyway window

Alter direction and check it out

Creaky door opens to a bells ring

Jukebox playing Liberace instrumentals

A speak-easy in the backwoods of a city

What is the nature of this mysterious pub?

Liquor is legal, no need to evade the law

Perhaps there is something...hm, esoteric

Sign me up, I'm game, let me in to your world

You never know destiny in the heart of this city

A double and a beer, and an inquiry, too

Bartender knows I've tuned in to the essence

"Just what kind of secret do you people know?"

Clearing his throat, "Through that door", he said

Into the black void beneath the lights of the city
