To Stand!

To Stand!

A Poem by Jeremy Michael White

Orbs of light drawing nearer from the thin realm of ideals in the sky

Fear of the unkown and illumination

        fight or flight

would you dare run for cover?

Where will you hide in the bottom of a barrel?

Nowhere to go - - - but up

Nothing to do - - - but succumb

Succumb to the positivitiy, the exaltation of heroic potential

It's taken this long, aeons it seems, to clear foggy thoughts from a heady sky

In this basement with the taunting chimney

    - Shut up!

I've had enough

Ascending the stairs - past the cobwebs - over the puddles of water dipping from sewage pipes

At the top is not the end, but the first step toward being in the outdoors of free opportunity

The navigation of this dark mansion will be full of obstacles and problems

Evil bats and ghosts, quizzically, will attempt to stall my movement

        Just another stepping stone

               Another mountain to climb

               Another confrontation with personal resolve

Before I can see the clouds

I must open my eyes down here in the basement

And take my first step - to stand!
