An InvitationA Chapter by Ollie

Edgeworth Residence, 2:15 PM.
Miles Edgeworth sat quietly on a crimson dining chair, tapping the touch screen on his light pink DS. He was wearing nothing but plaid pajama pants and his usual tidily combed silvery black hair was a complete mess. He had decided not to go to his office today because his trial against him had ended yesterday with an “innocent” verdict. Instead, he stayed home, away from the world of courts, laws, and prosecutors.
“Gah, why can I not get past this level!?” Miles muttered to himself, frustrated. He snapped the DS shut, and placed it on the wooden tea table. He shuffled over to his living room and slumped lazily down onto his burgundy sofa. He turned his head slightly and gazed out the glass window into a calm December afternoon, recalling yesterday’s events.
It was the final day in the Robert Hammond case. Miles’ defense attorney, Phoenix Wright, had surprisingly turned the case around, the finger of justice pointing at somebody that wasn’t named “Miles Edgeworth”. Miles was lucky to have asked Phoenix to defend him, even if he was a greenhorn lawyer. And because of Phoenix, new secrets were discovered. Not just about the case against Miles, but about the DL-6 incident.
DL-6.
Miles shuddered at the thought. Fifteen years ago, his father, Gregory Edgeworth, had been brutally murdered in an elevator. Miles had nightmares about that day, and he always woke up sweating like a pig. That day, Miles, his father, and the court bailiff, Yanni Yogi, were stuck in the elevator because of a blackout.
“HELP!”
“Don’t scream, it’ll only use up more oxygen!”
“Stop breathing my air!”
Miles desperately wanted them to stop fighting. Then, suddenly, he felt something near his feet. His hands moved their way towards the object. A pistol. He picked up, screamed, and threw it at the two men.
“GRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!”
Then Miles passed out.
The nightmare played in his head like reruns on television. He wanted, no, he needed them to stop. So he confessed to his crime in court.
The court was shocked at the recent turn of events. As soon as they had declared an “innocent” verdict for Miles, he walked up to the witness stand and pleaded guilty for DL-6. It was then that Miles got lucky. Again. Phoenix was able to prove Miles innocent using a simple chain of logic. Even better, he found the murderer in that very courtroom. Manfred von Karma. Miles was truly amazed at Phoenix’s skill…
DINGDONG! DINGDONG!
The sound of the doorbell broke Miles’ train of thought. Who could that be? Miles wondered to himself. He got up from the sofa, stretched, and toddled toward the door.
“Hi Mr. Edgeworth!” Maya Fey greeted happily. She was wearing her typical Japanese-looking clothing for spirit mediums, and her hair was tied back with a little lavender ribbon. Her smile quickly broke into laughter after she saw Miles. “Uhm, Mr. Edgeworth, why are you wearing only PJ pants?”
Miles felt the blood rushing to his cheeks, but immediately prevented himself from blushing. He had to admit, Maya was a sweet girl. “I had a lot of work to do and didn’t bother to change,” he lied. Maya looked unconvinced, but she didn’t bother to press him on that issue, to Miles’ relief.
“Mr. Edgeworth, Nick wants to give this to you.” She pulled out a white envelope and handed it to Miles. He tore the top open and pulled out the card inside. The card was black, had pink and blue blotches that Miles thought were supposed to be fireworks, and looked like it had been bathed in sparkles. He opened up the card and read it in his head.
“A new year’s party… tell Wright I can’t come,” Miles fibbed again. Maya pouted, displeased. She knew that Miles was never really a party person, so she attempted to convince him to come.
“Oh Mr. Edgeworth, please come. It’ll be fun! Think of it as a continuation of the celebration we had for our victory at your trial yesterday!” Miles stood there at his front door, wondering whether or not to allow himself to go. What the heck, it might be fun. It’s best I get out of my house anyways.
“Well Mr. Edgeworth? What’s it gonna be?” Maya asked playfully.
Miles sighed heavily and said, “Alright. Tell him I’m coming.” Maya beamed gladly.
“Great! We’ll see you there!” With that, she strolled across the stone pathway that led to the front door of Miles’ house, but not before turning around.
“And Mr. Edgeworth?” Maya yelled.
“Yes?”
“Nice abs.”
