The difference between fires

The difference between fires

A Poem by Kaspar Carr
"

Losing a friend like you... Will break me.

"
Hell's gate welcomes the death of our alliance.
The "me and you" stories, the conversations of uniting,
the thoughts of embarking a journey together-
all greeted with flames.

I didn't want this to burn. This illusion that lit
my world ablaze with hope and expectations,
but that's the difference between fires. One of
which illuminates your life; flirtation sparking,
laughter igniting. Then the one of disruption-
a killer.

Through this smoky distance I see our bond
dying and I wish to escape its suffocation. Yet,
its roaring, its controlling, and when I reach for
your comfort, I am burned with neglect.

Memories are melting and I can't save them,
for this destruction is determined. Motivated
by an authoritative fuel that begs for more;
commands the ashes of remembrance.

I don't expect you to comprehend the language
of my wheezing, but through this discomforting
cough, I'm still calling for you. Save me-
I want you!

As my body collapses to the floor and realization
sweeps my mind, I recognize it was you.
You felt our connection, scared of its dangers,
and struck the match...

A fire with no chance.
