![]() Macs VS P.C. A comparative analysis.A Story by The Poet of Black Wings
Macs and P.C.s, two popular computing platforms with similar qualities and functions. Owners of both have made it a point to defend why their system is the better one, and quite passionately at that. It is one of the great, long-standing, and wildly complex arguments within the tech community. This in particular is such a large argument; it’s spilled into circles outside of the tech world. Nearly everyone who uses a computing device of some sort seems to have their own opinion in this argument. But who’s right, Mac or P.C.?
Firstly, I’d like to set out the similarities between the two. Essentially, the two are exactly the same when it comes to hardware. They both use hard drives, RAM and other components that can be swapped between a PC or a Mac. When it comes to software, you can generally use the same programs. There are numerous editions of the Microsoft Office productivity suite, including Word and Excel. There are also numerous editions of Adobe's line of products available for both of the operating systems. This includes such popular graphics software as Photoshop and Illustrator, in addition to many other professional software applications. Content creation and multimedia production is possible on both platforms as well.
Next, the operating system and all that comes with it. This is the main difference between the two platforms. All Macs, produced by apple, run on OS X operating system, while P.C.s have a variation of systems. Windows, Linux, Solaris, etc. However I’ll focus on windows for now, as it is the more poplar among P.C.s. When it comes to a user-friendly interface in either, I’ve noticed a preference for windows. Mainly because it’s new upgrade, allowing it to not only work well on an average computer with a mouse and keyboard but also it’s capabilities to work well with the new touch devices like tablets or smartphones. Which is surprising to say, due to apples reputation with touch devices. When it comes to the software for the systems, it’s a close competition. Apple Bundles the OS X with programs such as iMovie, GarageBand, and of course iTunes. Windows, while it comes with similar programs that are intended to equal OS X’s programs, it does not yet come with true equivalents to some of OS X’s included software. Though, Windows’ (Microsoft’s) acquisition and integration of Skype allows it to counter Apple's Messages tool. Neither operating systems have a true advantage when it comes to office tasks: both have basic word processing software installed, so you’ll have to pay for the good stuff. The internet browsers that come with both, in my own personal opinion, are fairly equal and again, in my own personal opinion (due to a lack of complete knowledge of this particular part) It’s my belief that you’re better off with a third party browser, like Google chrome or Firefox.
Finally, I’ll tell you the difference in the hardware. Generally, all computers, Mac or P.C. use the same basic parts. hardirve, RAM, CPUs, fans, etc. Where it really differs is who made what and how good the individual parts are. When it comes to how macs are built, there isn’t a whole lot of variation. Most Macs are built exactly the same, depending on which specific generation of Mac it is, and even between the separate models, there are still many of the same parts included. This is good in the sense that Macs and their parts are interchangeable and easily replaced across all its variations. P.C.s however are a deal more complicated. While the variation in computers, parts, and their manufacturers has caused a healthy competition, which leads to upgrades on the parts year-round, it also means that they are much less easy to swap out between systems. But when you do manage to fit all the right parts together, you can create a vastly more powerful computer.
On an endnote, It’s clear that bot platforms, Mac and P.C., have a great deal of difference between the two and benefits to each. This does make it hard to say which is the clear winner, seeing as how both balance out their flaws with their own respective specialties. In the end, the argument can not yet reach a final conclusion, not yet anyway, and deciding on which is better is completely up to personal preference. I do so hope that I’ve made things a tad clearer for both sides of the argument though.
