The Journal

The Journal

A Poem by Calissa Knox

                                    You unlock the journal,

                                   but the pages remain empty.

They are waiting to be filled

with the emotions imprisoned inside of you.

They ask you to give them your heart that feels hollow.

They beg you to show them the depths of you soul

               that seem ineffable.

In return, they will tell you the secrets of life.

In return, they will unlatch vaults of hidden,

              valuable treasure.

But the world binds the soul

                                    with iron chains.

The world buries the heart with sand

so the beauty of your depth becomes close to invisible.

           You live in a shell,

                                   in a false reality.

                            Away from the soul's mirror

                       reflecting pictures of loss,

and the pain of your past.

The journal sits, alone on the desk.

                       The pages are calling.

But the world has sapped your inspiration.

The hurt is too strong, so you stopped letting yourself feel.

Emotion has become a vague and unwanted memory.

Chains and sand have dulled your beautiful heart.

Your soul is jaded, abandoned, and nearly hollow.

The journal sits on your desk

              to this very day...

The empty pages are calling you...

Wanting to be brought to life...

Beautiful. You created amazing imagery with your words. And also very creative using the journal to enhance the emotions of the person you write about. Well done :)

oh so true!, philosophical with deep emotion with a tinge of frustration and melancholy, I really like this and your style of writing. Often through writing we are brought to life as much as our thoughts are brought alive through our very essence.

Yes, very true. Thank you very much for the review! I appreciate your encouraging words. :)
Now this is one very cool piece of work. I like how you have taken this image of a book filled with empty pages, an inanimate object and given it a life of its own. The metaphor is a perfect depiction of someone's lonely life. Very well done.

They beg us to show them the depths of our soul,

which we cannot understand.
