Peter Pan and the Orphan

Peter Pan and the Orphan

A Poem by DJ
"

An orphan's dream once dreamt.

"

When I was young I wanted to be

Just like Peter Pan

He is an orphan too you see

But he resides in Neverland

A beautiful and ageless place

With pirates and fairies

Filled with wonder and with grace

A place a child was free

I sat alone, wondering

Gazing up at the clouds

Silently pondering

How to get there somehow

I lived inside a concrete tomb

Where I could hardly breathe

While Peter Pan just up and flew

I was longing to be freed

Orphans left abandoned here

In this darkened hell

Wishing we could fly up there

Where happiness was sure to dwell

Trapped, alone, indefinitely

My pain and suffering was enjoyed

My tormentors, my only company

I was destined to remain a Lost Boy

Wishing on the second Star,

The brightest light

My savior would come from afar

Gliding through the night

And leave my window ajar

And be stolen out of the bed

Blanket laid on cold concrete

No more tears to be shed

If Peter Pan, I did meet

I always listened for the Tink

The beautiful ring so clear

Of Tinkerbell a tinkering

Music to my ears

As time dragged out I lost faith

It would never materialize

A fairy dropped, met her fate

As the truth I realized

There was no tick tock crocodile

To slay Captain Hook

My dreams deemed infantile

An orphan’s happiness

Existing only in a book…

A child's wish to be somehow rescued. It takes a lot of real emotional work to sort through those feelings when we grow up.

Some poems are just harder to review. I think this is one of them. The subject of the piece and the deeply personal approach to it I find honourable. I can only stand back and admire the fortitude it took to survive and the courage displayed in writing about it today.

Thank you...bob

Oh Cairo.. this is wonderful! Peter Pan was one of my favorite tales as a child. I may not have been orphaned, but I still felt like one of those Lost Boys. The loneliness and sadness of reality is vividly portrayed in this piece. The story of Peter Pan woven throughout is displayed brilliantly. And the ending, such a sad fact for a young orphaned boy to realize. Wonderful job here!

Aww I absolutely love this one! The story of Peter Pan and of the orphans you speak about are so beautifully woven together. The idea of happiness and happily ever afters verses the reality that a lot of children face in their lives is beautifully written. I love the rhyming through-out, it sounds like an adventure all on its own. "I was destined to remain a Lost Boy" I love how you wove the characters together and related them flawlessly to each other. Very clever and witty.

"There was no tick tock crocodile
To slay Captain Hook
My dreams deemed infantile
An orphan’s happiness
Existing only in a book…"

The last part is so gripping, the realization that life really isn't as they portray in Disney classics and fairy-tales. A very sad reality. As a Disney fan I applaud you for this beautiful write.

Well keep writing, especially about what you enjoy because this piece is great!
Love this, the sing song flow fits the imageries of characters from children's tales. So many great writers write abt orphans, including charles dickens and roald dahl. This is a well penned addition to great writings.
