Do We Really Need An Education

Do We Really Need An Education

A Story by CEOCaples

The current education system

"

Research suggests there are fewer students with learning disabilities than diagnosed. In actuality, most students have skill deficits from not being taught. Predominately, this happens because special education has become a financial machine. When schools can use it to receive extra money, it becomes more of an economic stimulus package than real help for students. Due to racism and discrimination, many white teachers lack confidence needed to educate minority students. Therefore, they’re more likely to refer them for a special education evaluation. Furthermore, many Black parents lack education or have been miseducated about special education and ADHD. Therefore, they simply go along with the program; essentially making them a part of the system where special education is seen as a benefit rather than a deterrent. As it stands, drug companies make the greatest profit off these misdiagnoses and the students become the afterthought. Parents need to be educated on the side effects of these psychiatric drugs such as: Organ functioning, growth and development, permanent physical illnesses, diabetes, extreme weight lost/gain. Ironically these medications cause more of the same symptoms they were designed to eradicate. Maybe we should be reflective in understanding that it takes a village to raise a child. Instead, several parents are only adding to the problems in public schools. Parents are not adequately preparing their children for the seriousness of learning. In addition to, as a teacher, it is your responsibility to make sure your students learn regardless of the father being in jail, the mom being on welfare, or how poorly they were taught from the previous teacher(s). As long as there is a committed teacher any student can learn. Certain factors such as social economic backgrounds, two parent household, the amount of money a teacher is paid, or funding in the district shouldn’t determine if a child learns in a classroom. The student will learn if the teacher believes that the child can learn. Putting the 3Rs (Rigor, Relevance, & Relationships) in the right place will make it work. School administrators tend to put Rigor first (No Child Left Behind, Reach to Achieve) because everything is geared towards getting the students test ready. However, rigor cannot come first; relationships have to come first because a good teacher is like a good therapist. You have to be able to relate to children to earn their trust. Once you earn their trust, they will try and try harder as long as they know you will be there to catch them if they fall. The problem is, a lot of teachers don’t have a healthy relationship with the children they are teaching. Also, lesson plans have to be relevant. The instruction has to relate to the student’s everyday life. When these things, relationships and relevance, are implemented, rigor will come on its own. Testing is big in America, and Carl Brigham (American Eugenics Society, Racist & Father of the SAT test) was aware of this. Tests are used as a way to give a scientific approach to make it appear that people are responsible for why they’re not given an opportunity. America is a hierarchical racist society; as a result, there are strategies that can deny people opportunity without it blatantly looking like Jim Crow (Legal Segregation). Language is the biggest weapon of all standardized tests; deliberately confusing black children because it deviates from their everyday language. Our children are no longer reading; as a result, the average working vocabulary level among blacks is three grades below their current class standard. Consequently, black children are suffering from being academically delayed, not learning disabled. Parents must collect every cell phone, video game, and electronic devices that’s robbing our children of time that should be devoted to reading. With no money for tutoring and a lot of money for special education, the onus is on special education and not on academic rehabilitation.

Interesting facts on the disability problem in America and elsewhere. I worked with the disabled and mentally challenged for years in Michigan. Some were very bright and with a chance might have been taught and able to one day live on their own outside of a group home. We had no area where one race was treated differently that another.
