You Want...I Want

You Want...I Want

A Poem by Carrie Montgomery

You say these are simple tasks
And don't seem too much to ask.
You want:
A shirt that's not wrinkled
Sheets powder-sprinkled
A meal that's hot
Tea that's not
Every day lovin'
And bread from the oven.
Kind words from my mouth
A clean place on the couch
Books for grown-ups, not for babies
For me to always look "like a lady"
Adult conversations
And "Quality Time" reservations.

I want:
A day with no tears
A shirt with no smears
To smell of perfume and not baby vomit
To look at the floor and see nothing on it.
A day of rest
Time to get dressed
A chance to read or brush my teeth
No pile of dishes in the sink
A clean table on which to sup
After a meal, someone else to clean up.

My Dear I think it  very wise
We find some sort of compromise!
You can't have your cake and eat it too
You help me and I'll help you!
