Why Can't I

Why Can't I

A Poem by Sira YR
"

This was originally a class assignment, but I thought I would share this anyway. I don't know exactly what you would classify this as but here you go!! Enjoy :)

"

I sit at my window,

Sitting, waiting, contemplating, meditating

As life continues around me.

“Life goes on,” I think.

Slowly but surely,

Life goes on.

The human life,

Here one moment, gone the next

Fleeting, leaving,

Not even lasting

Yet life goes on.

People spend their mornings

praying, pleading, hopefully pleasing the God they worship,

Only hoping, never knowing what the day will bring.

Parents send their young to schools watching, waiting,

Hoping they don’t have to say good-bye.

Yet even with killings happening  and innocent blood being spilled mercilessly

Even with the lives of young souls being  taken never to experience joy again,

Even with murderings and pillagings and slaughterings and suicide bombings

That plague our world like an incurable disease,

Even with sickness and famines and greediness and deceitfulness being all too common

Life goes on and time moves forward.

Life goes on

Crawling, stepping, walking,

Trotting, prancing, running,

Jumping, flying, soaring,

Life goes on.

Only forward never backwards.

Time continues, never standing still.

Life goes on.

So why can’t I?

This is a sad and thought-provoking write for me, primarily because the concept of time and the "life goes on" philosophy have always fascinated me in a strange way. I find the concept of time difficult to grasp, primarily because it's ever-continuous ~ never stopping for even the slightest second. I could relate to the speaker in this poem because my mind is rarely in the present ... it's usually in the past or future.

As for the poem itself, it did a great job of portraying why humans are fascinated with time and how our views of time can affect us in our darkest moments. I could especially relate to the second stanza because of how it describes a moment ... it's almost like humans aren't truly capable of living in the present. The last line really helped bring this piece together ... excellent way of capturing how it feels when life travels faster that what you want to.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed.

Thank you so much!
I love the plethora of life instances - each one conjures up in the readers mind someone they know or a situation. Thats a good skill.
Its funny though that sometimes we feel stuck in a rut but its like the brain keeps learning and assimilating and when faced with a scenario that only months or years ago would have made us baulk suddenly - we can handle!
Only then do we realise that we werent actually standing still per se because we were growing as a person - like plants - tiny indiscernible growth spurts.
This is inspiring Raysira
Im glad I found this today.

Welcome Raysira
Thought provoking and gripping, I love the overall theme of this piece. I also like the ending with it's sense of loss and uncertainty, it makes the reader think back on their own hardships. Thanks for sharing.
