This isn't a dateA Chapter by CAiraIt was 4 o’clock and I was at ‘Junkies’, the new arcade
down from the park. I was really looking forward to getting to know Naya
better. Junkies was big, it had all the best games, from laser tag to Just
Dance. I doubted that we would play any of those games though; I didn’t think
Naya was that ‘type’. I walked into the cosmic room, where tons of little kids
ran in front of me carrying little toy guns. I looked around for Naya, she wasn’t
here yet. I went to the token machine and put in twenty dollars, I scooped my
tokens into one of the plastic cups. Kids were screaming, and so were their
mothers, while their fathers just sat there. I scanned the room looking for an
open table; I didn’t want her to feel like it was a date. Even though a part of
me wished it was. I found a table in the back corner, beside the mortal combat
game. I waited, and waited, and waited. It was 5:30 and she wasn’t here, I was beginning
to think she wasn’t coming at all, and I hadn’t even asked for her number. Just
as I was about to leave I saw the black bag with the variety of metal pins, and
then I saw the waist length auburn hair. She wasn’t wearing hand-me-downs
instead she was wearing red converse, black skinny jeans and a red Metallic
t-shirt. She looked gorgeous, and a part of me hoped that the reason she
dressed up was because of me. She scanned the room looking for me; I waved as she
walked over. “I was starting to think, you weren’t going to show” I smirked
“Yeah well I was thinking about it” she said in a teasing
way “Yeah? What changed your mind?” I asked “Well I haven’t been to an arcade in years, so I thought I
should come and check it out.” I could tell she was lying. “Whatever, you’re a horrible liar.” She laughed at that “I know, it’s because I don’t lie that often.” “Well I’m glad you came! So is there any particular game
that you wanna play?” She shook her head, in response as she looked around at
the huge array of games. Most taken by fighting kids. “How about Mortal Combat?” I grinned and I could tell she
was familiar with the game. “You don’t have a chance” she winked and grabbed two
coins out of the cup that was on the table. We walked over to the game as she
put the two coins into the machine. ‘Two-players’ it said, as I grabbed my
controller and she grabbed hers, she still had her bag on. In a matter of
minutes she had beaten me five times and we were both laughing our guts out as I
grabbed two more coins, daring her to try and beat me again. She was laughing
so hard that her tan skin was blood red, but she looked extremely beautiful,
her hair was glowing in the cosmic lights and so were her eyes. She was calling
my name, and I knew that I must have been staring, again. “Are you ok?” she asked, revealing the most beautiful
smile I had ever seen “Ye...yeah sorry I sorta have a staring problem” I tried
to play It off but by the way she stared at me I could tell she knew I was
lying. “Yeah ok,” she grabbed the coins out of my hand and ran
over to just Dance, motioning for me to come over. I was shocked; I didn’t think she was that
type of girl. I walked over and said, “You dance?” I asked “Not really, but it looks fun. Come on” She put the coins
in “Uh, I’m not really a dancer” I crossed my arms and she
leaned her head to the side and pocked her lip out, making the puppy face. “Please. You’re the one who invited me here.”
She was right, and I really liked her even though she thought we were just
friends. I got on the dance platform beside her as she pushed the button for
two players. We scanned the song selections together and decided to just go
with a random choice since we couldn’t agree on any. The screen flashed Ready…Set…Go.
The music was fast and we were horrible, she wasn’t much better than me. But we
were having fun, she laughed at me being so stiff. I laughed at the fact that
she was dancing with a bag on, but she didn’t care, and that’s what I liked
most about her. After we finished we were out of
breath and hungry, we ordered two slices of pizza and a pitcher of pop. She
insisted on paying half but I wouldn’t let her, she looked angry as we walked
back to the table with our tray. “What’s wrong” I asked “Why didn’t you let me pay?” she
asked in a snappy tone “I’m sorry; I just thought it was
the right thing to do. As the guy and all.” I said “Your acting like this is a date,
were here as friends, remember” she poured herself a cup of pop “I remember, and I’m sorry. I
would suggest returning the stuff and then buying it again, but I think it’s too
late for that!” We both laughed. The rest of the time we played
random games with the rest of our tokens, until there were no more. We walked outside, it was slightly windy and I
put my hoodie on. I could feel her watching me with those eyes, and I wondered
what she was thinking. When I looked up she turned away quickly and pretended
to be looking at a couple across the street at the park, “So, I had a great time, Danny”
she smiled softly, I couldn’t take it any longer. The feelings, I felt whenever
she was around. ‘Yeah, me too” I stepped closer
to her, and I could see her body tense. I was so much taller than her; I leaned
down and put my hand on the back of her neck. I could feel the heat going
through both of our bodies. She leaned her head into my hand, and my lips were
just about to touch hers when she pulled away. Before I could say anything she
dashed off, faster than I could call her name. © 2013 CAira |
