Clang. Step, step, step…

Darkness.

That is my earliest memory.

Silence.

That is most of my life since age 7.

The White-Coats separated me from my dear Aya when we turned 7 years old. Our struggle to stay together is what keeps me alive. On that day, the briny tears on our faces mixed with the rusty blood dripping out of our mouths and made patterns in the dust at our feet. The White-Coats had forced the metallic liquid into our mouths. As the warm fluid slowly made its way down my throat, my head began to hurt. Both of us had desperately groped in the pitch-black for the other to find an escape from the pounding, burning torment. The strong White-Coats bruised us as we strained against their vices. My other half was taken from me. Ayako.

Since that time, I have never seen anyone besides the same White-Coats. One of them started to teach me to speak, read, write, and solve math. He also taught me science and history. Today he told me that the White-Coats will let me leave. then, I heard him say something strange, “Happy 16^th Birthday.” The ground shook like an earthquake. What did he mean? Why happy? What must I be happy? I know what a birthday is, but why was he the first person to ever say that to me?

I am feeling really sleepy. This thick tea is really comforting. He gave it to me after our lesson today. It is the sweetest drink I have ever tasted. I cannot focus, I feel dizzy…
