Driving Car

Driving Car

Just something that has been on my mind for a long time.

Driving Car

Rainy day, roads slick

Can’t see well

Brake lights ahead, slow down

See car in front go over guard rail

Falling, slow motion

Panic sets in, STOP!

Get out of car, go to broken rail

White car, crumpled

Mass of twisted metal

Man, injured

Blood flowing into drainage ditch

Nauseated, afraid

Unable to reach him

Unable to help

Scream

Ambulance arrives

Paramedic seems not to care

Moves slowly to back of ambulance

Gets out folding chair

Sits down, lights cigarette

“Help him!  What’s wrong with you?”

Slow southern drawl response

“It’s okay, he dead already.”

Confused, afraid, alone

Blood still flowing, man groans

“He’s not dead yet! Help him!”

Paramedic sighs

Gets up, puts chair away

Goes back into ambulance and leaves

Man, broken, bleeding, tries to move

Fails

Look around; try to find a way down

Broken guard rail on overpass

No good, too far of a drop

Fencing blocking hill, can’t reach

Keep looking, there!

Opening in fence, go down

Grass slick, steep hill

Slide, slip, fall, roll

Reach the bottom, battered and bruised

But still whole

Run to injured man, so much worse up close

Broken, battered, bones visible

Deep gash, blood flowing

Try to cover, hold, and stop the bleeding

Man groans, so much pain

Looks up, eyes cloudy

“It’s okay, thank you for trying”

Gone now, no sound

World stops, bleeding stops

Breathing stops

Why?

This was very intense to read, personally. I liked how the short verses controled the poem. Well done.
