Lilies of the ValleyA Poem by Kristen LilesLilies of the Valley I was talking one day with the Lilies of the Valley And the question they posed I pondered. They said, "Why does the Earth dislike me?" And thus they shrunk back asunder. My heart cried for them, and shared their woe. Why did the earth hate them? Why would it? It had put them there after all.
I sat alone wondering
With my Lilies of the Valley sundering. They swayed, heads drooped, with the breeze. Seeming just like an old man who is lonely, Like any person who is lonely. It was beginning to get dark,
And therefore time to leave So I said goodbye to my Lilies of the Valley. And just before I laid my head, The answer to that question came instead. It was not the Earth that hated the Lilies of the Valley Or the Roses in the Bushes Or the Brook in the Mountain Crook. The Earth loved these things very much That's why it sent me and you. To take care of all the Lilies of the Valley. But we have turned to "greater things". Like phones, cars, trucks, and trains. And have forgotten our Lilies of the Valley. So now when you ponder their question: "Why does the Earth hate me,"
Look around, and say and see, "The only one who is hating anything, is me."
