Forth Piece

Its dawn the next day and everything is ready to go. The families that support us came together to help their children Many of the parents, like my father, completely oppose our stand. As we begin to set off, the understanding families gather around the South Gate to wave good-bye. 

        I look around at the gathering and frown. Turning to Kie, I ask, “Where are your parents? Surely they aren't against us.” 

        “No,” Kie, who volunteered to drive our supply wagon, keeps his eyes on the road ahead. “They knew about your father's plan for the past two weeks. They acted like sheep being rounded up by the shepherd. They followed along even when they knew it wasn't right. I told them not to come.” 

        I nod, understanding, and watch the scoots take off. Scoots are the key part of Kamin caravan defenses. They use powerful air weaves to push them up into the sky and from there they ride the winds like birds using the specially designed capes. I perch lightly on the bench of the wagon, waiting to take off. 

        “Are you going to be our fearless leader, Rin?” Milas asks as she pulls up next to us on a tyskin, a large, flightless bird that the people of Kamin use like horses. “I mean, you have to be.” 

        “No, I'm not. Darin is.” Darin is my forth or third cousin, the closest family I have in Kamin besides my father. “I don't want to be a Katallelou anymore. My father is a disgrace and I will no longer be connected to him. From now on I'm just Rin Kasysin.” The two smile at the play off my mothers maiden name. “I'm going to head our defenses. It's fitting for the Top Graduate,don't you agree?” 

        “Yes, Rin, very fitting,” Kie smiles at me. “You'd best get up there.” 

        I nod and take off. The chain in the hem of my cloak snaps into a bar and I soar into the sky and look over my people.
