Third Piece

A Chapter by Burr the Story Sorceress

For a whole ten seconds, there is complete silence. Then pandemonium.

The Top Twenty students' outrage is defining. All of them had worked so hard to go on this trip, all were not going to give it up without a fight.

Personally, I'm in shock. My father has eyes and ears everywhere. Even if he ignores me, even he should knowhow important this is to me. As shock fades, anger takes its place. How could he? How could he! There is no way I will stand this.

The air ripples, much like water does when you drop a pebble in it. The students fall silent and the Loudar stand at attention. They feel my power move the air and know I want to speak. I stand and the other grads sit so even my short form sticks out.

“Father,” my quite voice carries in the large, silent room, “what are you thinking? This trip helps us learn about our fellow talles. It keeps prejudice and hatred from spreading in Mintalle. Why are you canceling it?”

My father looks down his nose at me. “Times are changing. The old way will work no more. We must adjust ourselves The founders of the four kingdoms were fools. By standing together, the other kingdoms have been dragging us down. Only through standing alone can we move forward.”

“What are you talking about?” I ask. “What has come over you?” We can only go forward with the help of our neighbors. To separate ourselves from them is to leave us at the mercy of the Gyndric. Only together can we fight them. Have you forgotten that while watching the jugglers, Father?”

My father yells in furry and snaps his fingers. The Loudar, sworn to always obey their king, attack. The new talles, who had grown up with me, raise to stop the Loudar. They are too slow.

I spin, churning the air around me, sending it out in a powerful wave. The air wave hits the Loudar, sending them into the wall, unconscious.

“You are a fool, Father. I will not follow your plan. It will only lead to our death. I will go to the other kingdoms. You will not stop me.”

“You will go alone, Rindeal? You will forsake your family and your people? You are the fool, Rindeal. No one will follow you. It would mean exile for all those who do,” my Father laughs at me.

Kie stands, raising his hand. “I will follow the Katallelou.”

Milis jumps up,her hand in the air. “I will follow the Katallelou.”

All at once, the other grads stand and raise their hands and vow to follow me. It shocks me that they all have so much faith in me, but I'm grateful for their support.

“I wish you no ill, Father. We will leave at dawn tomorrow. We will return in fifteen years. Goodbye.”

I leave the hall. The grads follow me. I lead our future on its path to fulfillment.
