Heaven.

Heaven.

A Story by Kat Loch

Lily looked over at Jack, happiness building up inside her tiny seven year old body. She caught his wide eyes staring directly into hers and she returned her innocent gaze back up to the purple night sky, lit up brightly with white stars. Her small hand was in Jack’s bigger nine year old hand and they were shoulder against shoulder in the grass that was almost taller than the both of them. The summer breeze swayed the grass they laid in, brushing up against their sides.

“Where is it you were going, Jack?” Lily turned her head to the side, awaiting an answer. In her fluttering heart, she hoped it wasn’t far.

“It’s a place called Heaven, Lily. It’s a place full of happiness and love and joy,” he turned his head to face her, as well, and any emotion but happiness dropped from his face.

“I want to go,” she whispered as she closed her eyes.

“You can’t. Not yet.”

“When can I?” Lily watched the wondrous place, Heaven apparently, unfold upon the insides of her eyelids. Endless sunny days that lit up adventures for her and Jack; no fights between her parents…

“Try to live here longer. Heaven is a place worth waiting for; I promise.” Jack smiled as he spoke, staring up into the night sky. The stars flickered like flames, a thousand, vibrant flames.

She opened her eyes, her heart sinking. “When are you leaving?”

“Tomorrow.”
