I'm losing you to ForeverA Story by Kat LochJames held Eve’s cold hand in his as they sat in the snow at the edge of the river. A light rain had begun to fall, turning the snow into mush before it refroze again seconds later. “Please, Eve. No, stay with me,” James whispered quietly, hints of pain and sorrow lacing his words. He lifted her hands to his nearly frozen lips and kissed Eve’s. “Forever,” Eve spoke with such liveliness that one may mistake the dying girl with any other. Eve looked up at James, directing in his chocolate brown eyes lined with sleepless purple. She smiled as memories flickered in her bright eyes. “I’ve never wanted to die, James. Nor have I ever thought of dying. I wanted to be immortal, to be able to dance forever, upon stages everywhere. If I am to die, I wish to die dancing.” She pulled her hand out of his and shakily pushed herself up. With a wide smile, she backed up, her bare feet falling into the deep snow. Eve ran her fingers through her waist length brown hair and began twirling. James sat in amazement as he watched the dying girl dance. Her dress and hair wrapped around her, encasing her in pure elegance. The contrast between the colored girl and the white around her mesmerized him. As time drifted on, Eve began to fade from elegant to clumsy. She stumbled through the snow and fell to the ground. James jumped up and leapt through the snow over to her. He knelt beside the fallen girl and took her hand once again. “You’re so cold, Eve,” he whispered in her ear, irony filling his voice. “I feel so alive through.” She took her free hand and caressed his face. “You know I love you.” James murmured, his voice breaking. “Yes, and I love you too, as well.” James leaned in closer and put his lips on hers. Pulling back after a moment, he looked in her eyes. The light in her went dark. Standing, he wiped away the tears as he saw her turn to shadow and slip into forever. © 2011 Kat LochAuthor's Note
