Time TravelA Story by Kat LochYou are standing in the middle of a hectic cobblestone road. Medieval style buildings line the road, perfect glass windows glinting in the dim sunlight that filters through the cloudy sky. Carriages, pulled by well-groomed horses, bounce up and down over the stone road, shaking up the passengers inside. In the moment it takes you to try to catch detail on the carriage, it’s gone. In front of you, and oncoming carriage barrels and the horses show no signs of slowing down. You leap off to the side to avoid a gory and painful death, but stumble next to a newsstand. A little old man is beside it sitting on the ground. Piles of yellowed parchment fill up the table. You decide to take a glance over them, and find the date heading it: January 3, 1851. Aye, you are in the middle of the 19th century. Don’t fret. There are many lovely things that power over the twisted world you come from. Just look around the crowded street. All the women are wearing plain, but quite elegant, dresses that drag across the rather clean ground. On their arm, their lads are correctly clothed as well. This is not the general clothing you find in the modern 21st century, now, is it? They are all too proud and modest to show even a bit of skin. Now pause. Ignore the growing commotion, and take a deep breath as you look up to the grey sky that dramatically hangs over your head. Do you feel the pollution, all the smoke, racing into your lungs? No, cars have not ruined our Earth, which is a gift that we must take care of. You look around at the clean society around you. There is no trash squeezed in between the stone puzzle pieces of the road. There is no bags tumbling through the wind. In fact, a little ways down, you see, there is a young man sweeping the stones. A cleaner! Those are rare as finding a gem in the sand box of an elementary school’s playground. Moments later, you are now standing on the sidewalk over modern day life.
