After the Storm

After the Storm

A Poem by ashley.centers

She stands in front of the mirror.

Broken hearted and bruised.

Sweeps up shattered glass through

deep breathes. Check on the children.

Rock the baby back to sleep singing

sweet lullabies. One day she swears

she’ll be strong enough to break free.

Bursts of azure, mulberry and garnet

collide in the sky before fading into

oblivion. Streaks of sunlight dance

in through the window. Leaves fall

to the ground as the speeding car carries

her sorrows away. The future looks bright.
