Play Me...For Me

Simply put, I love all kinds of music and this is my growing love affair...

 

Each hum from my heart amplifies every pickup

never numb it fills the bass of every line yet not as a drum

as a funk filled string as thick as any sexy little thing

and my eyes, not my voice, tend to sing

every light and decibel shines dimensions I bring

fracturing all types of stereos

 

Cause every time I catch cords my mind races

each nerve braces despite the tempo or style

with a Les Paul slung like a weapon I file

away tones and licks that hip hop or rock alone

might not pick

 

And as I do, I strut

knowing that I appreciate

that which others were blessed to create

in that moment of musical zen, that zone

like when this pen met me and found its home

and it’s there that I roam

between the pen and this chorded zen

between the thump and some bass line funk

between solemn violin and a flute’s sweet wind

between Black Thought and Metallica rock

 

At times I sing to it

and when I write, I bring ‘me’ to it

do nearly everything to it

whether its work or driving to it

 

I don’t have the blessing of loving it all

yet I can get into most

but I do so not to boast but rather to savor

and roast in as much flava as can be

so that when I offer a recent piece

of me

it can be as dynamic as any mash-up or remix could ever be

a classic collage of originality

 

And now that my body screams in jealousy

of the joy that my ears have had with me.

I submit and have found a new passion to commit

mocking my old fear of working hard to be decent

at something clearly a thrill to create and present

 

so as I thrash and they frown

I’ll continue to mold me through this new passion I’ve found

because their genres don't scare me...
