Not Like Before

Not Like Before

A Poem by BJ "Bunneh3000" Brown
"

Same old problems and situations yet for some reason... something is different this time... hmmmmmm?

"

She clutched her sadness
yet remained above depression
she reran her story to her friend
venting didn’t ease her stress
again love had come close
and life chased it away
this time his love surpassed hers
yet the distance turned all to dismay
usually laughter and dance cured all
past lovers faded and all tears stall
but this one was different
and not like before

He screamed at his wife
and repeated his side
she couldn’t possibly be serious
so he calmed down and sighed
how many times had this fight replayed
as if in ‘making it work’ this was his first try
or this was the only point he’s ever made
“I never knew that, baby”
Maybe she lied…
his disbelief and distress left him spent and fried
usually a video game and a few beers cured all
her voice would taper off or a friend he’d call
but this time was different
and not like before

Mondays, meetings, and bills
these highlight may days
motivate my chills
I drone along my daily path
of debt-infested math
and manage still to joke and laugh
at the level of my plight
though I stress the details
stress the grind, still I find that
my situ’ is not that threatening
not that intense or frightening
typical family wisdom isn’t even enlightening
yet the way I am still unsettles my lunch
can’t stomach the status my life seems to touch
cause now my life’s different
and not like before
