My House of Cards

My House of Cards

A Poem by Aron Smith

I start off here alone,
you and me make two,
maybe three if we decide
to bring a life into;
this world, If you need luck
I'll find you a four leaf clover;
and I'll slap you a high five
whenever you come over.
Six is Hell,
so I skipped on by to seven,
spinning round in figure eights,
as if I'd entered Heaven.
I never pack a nine,
on that you can depend;
and when I look at you
I see a perfect ten.
I still don't know Jack,
except that you're my Queen,
and I'm the King of the Castle,
in my dreams.
Nothing up my sleeves,
but I've an ace in the hole.
I'm a joker, and I'm wild,
which means nothing at all.

I give you my heart,
hoping you give me yours.
Diamonds always sparkle,
but cut me to the core.
You can keep your clubs,
with their hormone slaves.
Pass me a spade,
and I'll dig my own grave.

Whenever I see you,
walking into view;
My stomach twists and folds,
with what I feel for you.
I feel my cheeks flush,
and my face go red.
I wanna call you a goddess,
take you straight to bed.
Make me wanna raise my game,
and stand out from the pack.
Getting high off your beauty
taking hits till I snap.
Your body is amazing,
I'm in awe of your bust;
but I need you to know,
This is love, not just lust.
This isn't some trick,
just so we can knock boots.
Please see me as a man,
Not just a pig in a suit.
I'm not tryin' to be a stud
so there's no need to fear,
My cards are on the table
Please tell me that you care.

I give you my heart,
hoping you give me yours.
Diamonds always sparkle,
but cut me to the core.
You can keep your clubs,
with their hormone slaves.
Pass me a spade,
and I'll dig my own grave.

This flows rather nicely.

And who knew the ambiguity, lying within a deck of cards? Outstanding.

I love the (usually) subtle use of card words. They blend in so well. Usually poems following themes like this come out sounding rather forced and are difficult to read smoothly, but not this one. This one just works.
