Prodigal Son

Prodigal Son

A Poem by Brother Jacob

I lived with my father and brother, for many years. I thought to myself, “I must get out of here." So, I asked for my inheritance, and I walked out the door. For a new world, I wanted to explore. I found a nice, place to rent. It was worth the money, that I spent. I threw parties, every single night. I stayed up, until the break of daylight. I experimented with drugs, and alcohol too. And many prostitutes, I did pursue. About 6 months later, I was out of money. I wasted my inheritance, and it wasn’t funny. I didn’t even have enough money, to buy a bread crumb. I can’t believe, that I was so dumb. I saw a job advertisement, at Narrow Street. I went to work, so I could eat. The job was on a farm, feeding the swine. I needed the money, so I didn’t whine. I was so hungry, I could have eaten the pigs’ pie. I threw my face in the mud, and began to cry. When I became broke, all my friends deserted me. And I fell, into misery. I decided to return, to my father’s home. There I would be loved, and wouldn’t be alone. I would ask him for forgiveness, and I would ask to be his servant. It would be better, than becoming a hermit. When I arrived home, I was caught by surprise. For tears of joy, filled my father’s eyes. He placed a ring on my finger, and a robe on my back. I thought he’d be angry, maybe he cracked. No, he didn't crack; he was glad I turned my life around. The son he had lost, he was now found. He then threw, a party on my behalf. For me he killed, the fattest calf. Adapted from Luke 15:11-32 Written 9/14/20 Painting by Wayne Pascall
