For the Love of the GameA Poem by BrooklynAn athlete's poem about the love of basketballI step onto to the court I find freedom They announce my name The whistle blows The game begins And I get the ball The intensity drives me insane The energy is wild My adrenaline rush is hyping I dribble, I shoot, I score The crowd goes wild I keep my head in the game But this is the reason why I play I step onto the court I give it all or nothing Win or lose This game means something We’re a team That’s how it works She plays for me I play for her And together we’ll shine We race against the clock So when that last buzzer sounds Our score is up This is the reason why I play I step onto the court This wooden floor is my stage It’s the day I’ve been waiting for It’s game day Against our biggest rivals That team that always wins But this time will be different It’s our turn to win We work as a team For each other For our coaches For our fans This is the reason why I play I step onto the court It’s my very last game Basketball had consumed me But now it must end My emotions are soaring All over the place But I play my heart out I give my absolute everything We lost by 3 points Barely missed that championship game I could have made history Missed it by that much So why did I play? I stepped off that court For the very last time I wanted to scream My tears wouldn’t stop That was my last game With the game that I loved It felt like a bad break-up The day I left that gym The day that I had to, Turn my number 13 jersey in But I’ll always love the game It’s not just a sport I play It’s a part of who I am now It’s written on my heart It’s always on my mind It’s a passion in my soul So yes this is a love poem A love poem for my broken heart From the day I had to walk away From the only thing I truly loved And this is the reason why I played
