![]() Burning ColdA Chapter by BrookeShadow's vague form raced in front of me as I struggled to keep up. Running in snow wasn't easy and my knees were already starting to burn. Opaque clouds escaped my lips as I breathed heavily. My entire body now felt like it was on fire and my chest hurt more than anything. I winced at the sharp needles poking my ribs but kept running. Shadow began barking fiercely. He slowed to a stop, sniffing the snow. He lost Nicholas's scent. In this snow, I'm surprised we made it this far. Exactly how far could Nicholas have gone? I bent over, heaving more air into my lungs and trying to catch my breath. Suddenly, the bark was ripped off the tree next to me. I froze, aware of the distance of the gunshot and the trajectory of the bullet that nearly killed me. I almost didn't notice that Shadow wasn't near me anymore. The shot must have scared him. I hope he finds his way back to Dad....Come to think of it, I hope I find my way back too. Another bullet struck near me, this time a little further away than the first. It was enough to jolt me out of my stiff state. "Hey! Don't shoot! There are people out here! You could hurt someone!" I yelled, waving my arms. I prayed that whoever was crazy enough to hunt in this weather would hear or see me and put down their gun....I was wrong. Moments later, another shot was fired and I felt something collide with my arm. I was thrown to the ground and a blinding, burning pain surged through my arm. I laid on my back in shock as the snow around me grew warm. Icy coldness spread through me instantly. I couldn't move. As I laid there, a thousand thoughts raced through my mind. However, only one word repeated itself over and over again: Wolves. © 2016 Brooke |
