You Were Young Once.A Poem by BeatricePortinari. You were young once, Older eyes told you not to grow, But as the sun would set upon our world, Burning it- You would not listen. There was a time when you were beautiful. When you were free to run, To lose yourself in the small, Thin beauty you could find- But now things are complicated, You have me and my fragile tendencies To wean, Your hands, the ones that used to play instruments, Now wipe my chin. They are wrinkled, and you are gray. Now what of the world if you, Lovely, vibrant you- Had stayed young? Would your eyes be brighter, Seeing different sights? What would be of your dreams, Your lovers, Your ideas to harness the clouds from the sky? Would you have been a different person, Given one more treacherous chance? Or am I worth all that I have been? This life, the one you live, Do you regret the path your feet have traveled, With or without your broken permission? … Do you love me enough To understand this life, And to live through it- Or do you wish, now, To be far away? © 2011 BeatricePortinari.Author's Note
