The Road of Nightmares

The Road of Nightmares

A Story by Briege Havern

The road was a familiar one, green fields sprawled on either side. The only new addition was the school which I had never noticed before. For some reason I knew that my mum was attending a class there, but I couldn’t tell you what course she had taken on, all I could be sure of was that she was there. It was the only reason we were on the road, my dad and I were going to pick her up.

My granddad only lived a few minutes away so I wasn’t surprised to see his car approaching just before we pulled into the school’s parking lot. He followed us in, rolling down their windows my dad spoke with his father-in-law and they decided that we would take my great uncle back to the house (he lived with my granddad) and my granddad would wait for his daughter to come out of class.

We loaded my great uncle into our car and pulled out onto the country road. In the distance a figure staggered down the road towards us, there was something off about them. As we got closer it was evident that the figure was a female, her brown hair was a mess, her clothing was torn and matted with mud and blood. She only looked as though she was seventeen or eighteen. Of course, my dad started to slow the car, intending to stop and help the girl, but as we almost came to a halt, the first thing I noticed was the maniacal look in the girls dark brown eyes, the next was a flash of silver in her hand. She was holding a knife. Panic gripped at me and I called out,

‘Keep driving, please keep driving.’

My dad didn’t ask for an explanation he just increased the speed of the car and we drove past the girl. I turned in my seat to catch a glimpse of her as we turned the corner and a shiver ran through me as I could see her standing in the middle of the road staring at us.

We got to my granddad’s house, and I went and opened the doors. Walking into the kitchen a soft meow caught my attention. Perched on top of a box was a cat, I automatically thought that my cousin’s cat had somehow snuck into the house. On closer inspection, I realized that it wasn’t my cousin’s cat at all, it was the wrong color. It was at that moment that the cat jumped from the box, the lid of the box popped open and to my amazement cats began jumping out of the box until every surface of the room was covered with the furry felines.

Suddenly I found myself at home, tucked up in bed and fast asleep when a shadow falls over my bed. The girl from the road was standing over me with the knife clutched tightly in her small hand.

‘You should have stopped,’ she sneered just before she plunged the cold blade deep into my heart. As I felt life fade slowly away I felt my spirit rising up and then I was turned to stare down at my body just as death grasped me.
