The Great Oak

The Great Oak

A Poem by Bridget McJane
"

Describing a scene I saw during a car ride in an open field with a single Oak tree in the center.

"

        A grassy field

Wheatgrass blows in the wind

A lone tree stands tall

The Great Oak so strong

Small carving in the bark

Two letters in a shape added together

A faded memory

A fond memory

Children run up to say hi

Others come to climb

This Great Oak is never meant for the two again

Others come to carve

To make sweet memories

The tree dies a little when each carve is broken

Eventually that great oak will become a dust in the wind

Until then the main carve will remain there

Until the field too withers away

A grassy field

Wheatgrass blows in the wind

A lone tree stands tall

The Great Oak so strong

With two letters in a shape added together forever

Strong imagery and also a sense of nostalgia in your lines. I like the idea of the names carved in a shape left on that oak which will remain until its demise. My husband carved my poetry name on a felled tree on an island in the river several years ago. We go back to visit. Your poem reminded me.
