Depressed? Get a clue....A Story by Brett PritchardYeah, I'm bibolar, are you bipolar? No? Well are you autistic then? Don't you even have basic depression dude? You're so uncool....
Depressed? Is that what you are? I don’t think so. Depression is not a novelty. Depression is an inescapable vile suffocation. A daily torment that paralyses the body, and addles the mind. Depression is more than a bad day, or a tough month. It is an ache that never truly goes away, always throbbing secretly somewhere deep within. People who say they are depressed usually aren’t. They couldn’t begin to understand what it feels like, the fear of it, the isolation of it, the tireless self doubt. Stressed? Well how stressed exactly? Stressed enough to tremble and lose control of your breathing? Stressed enough to go into an uncontrollable state of panic? Or just a bit annoyed about yet another of the ludicrously trivial aspects of daily life? People bandy around mental health terms carelessly nowadays, claiming themselves bipolar or autistic. They do so because they think it makes them sound cool or interesting. It doesn’t. Mental illness is not a brand. It’s not a convenient excuse to explain away rude or unacceptable behaviour. It is something very real, and very serious, that millions of us have to cope with on a daily basis. So please stop trying to turn it into some band wagon. Stop telling anyone who’ll listen how depressed or stressed you are, desperate for a sympathetic response. It’s time it stopped. Mental illness is not a glamorous conversation starter….
